History & Background (Dossier)

The poni is a large creature resembling an eight-legged horse, which was used as a beast of burden on several worlds in the Sylean Federation and has since spread to many other systems. Poni are well suited to carrying a rider at considerable speed over long distances, and can handle rough terrain that would defeat a Horse or Kian. Poni are not so much agile as stable, however, and do not turn quickly. An unwary rider who begins a turn on ‘on the wrong leg’ can bring his mount down hard enough to inflict serious injury to both. More experienced riders can read their mount’s complex gait and use it to ‘smooth out’ rough ground and guide the animal through quite complex evolutions that would confound a less skilled poni-wrangler.

The xboat service emblem was taken from a history of Terra by Professor Dinimbue of the University of Sylea. The professor found records of an organization called the Pony Express, but her knowledge of old Anglic was not complete enough to equate the word pony with the Terran horse. The professor translated the word as poni, a beast of burden used on several worlds of the Sylean Federation. When the xboat service was organized, the emblem was designed, even though by then the professor’s mistake had been discovered.

Travellers' Aid Society Advisory

The Travellers' Aid Society (TAS) classifies the Poni as perfectly safe to most sophonts and advises no particular caution when in the presence of this organism.

• Larger carnivorous sophonts are advised caution around this lifeform as their pheromonal signatures may spook this animal. Animals may lash out with their locomotory limbs or bite under such conditions.
