These early explorers were disappointed with the system's cool, dim, M-class sub-dwarf and were quick to name its distant (and only) accompanying planet {{vilani|Piirgu}}, after a frozen hell mentioned in Vilani mythology. The surface temperature has been known to reach 33°K during abnormal flare activity, but rarely moves from an average of 31°K. The slow rotational period of 23 days results in the lit side baking under harsh stellar radiation.

The local ice-miners are paid highly for working in one of the most unforgiving environments in the sector. Accidents on the surface are frequent, and invariably fatal.

Piirgu is a vacuum world, with a complete lack of atmosphere. The system has a population between 10,000 and 10 million, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. The world lies substantially outside of the habitable zone of the system and environmental temperatures are well below the freezing point of many gases.  This is a high technology world with available technology over the standards for Charted Space. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Iiradu Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Piirgu, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. This world has a nearby Imperial Way Station. During the Long Night this world was named Shashuush.

Astrography and planetology

This world is a member of the Iiradu Trace.

History and background

This system lies only 36 parsecs from Vland (Vland 1717) and was first visited shortly after the Vilani invention of the Jump Drive around ten thousand years ago. These early explorers were disappointed with the system's cool, dim, M-class sub-dwarf and were quick to name its distant (and only) accompanying planet Piirgu (Anglic: Piirgu), after a frozen hell mentioned in Vilani mythology. The surface temperature has been known to reach 33°K during abnormal flare activity, but rarely moves from an average of 31°K. The slow rotational period of 23 days results in the lit side baking under harsh stellar radiation.

Other, more choice, worlds of the subsector attracted initial colonization efforts, and wasn't until the development of the X-Boat network through the area, and growing trade links between Iiradu (Dagudashaag 3008) and Larmige (Dagudashaag 2709) that further thought was put into developing a human presence here.

Today the population of six hundred thousand are almost all employed within the scout way station and starport facilities. Due to reasons of environmental control, it was deemed safer to place the starport into low Piirgu orbit, rather than on the surface of the main world. The current structure has evolved into a roughly cubical structure some six hundred meters on a side. It is capable of handing vessels up to 5,000 dtons in internal hangers. Vacuum docking facilities are available for larger ships.

Several thousand people are employed on the surface of Piirgu, mining the iron hard ammonia and methane ices. The mining is done from within sealed and insulated crawler rigs. The ices are refined into fuel for starships and both merchants and the Scout Service rely on this fuel source. The local ice-miners are paid highly for working in one of the most unforgiving environments in the sector. Accidents on the surface are frequent, and invariably fatal.
