Paria is a poor, nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
  • This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Natar Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data

Lyonie-Paria System

The primary is Lyonie, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.007 Sols, a mass of 0.331 Sols and a diameter of 498,000 km. (I) Bordo, a small gas giant; (Ib) Paria is its outer moon and is designated the mainworld, (II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (III) a ringed large gas giant, (IV) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (V) a small gas giant, (VI) a ringed small ice giant, (VII-I) a vacuum iceworld, (VII-II) a trace atmosphere iceworld, and (IX) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system – orbital position (VIII) is empty. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(I) Bordo

(I) Bordo is a small gas giant that orbits Lyonie at a mean distance of 0.19 AU (28.4 million km), within the outer system, and has an orbital period of 52 days 14 hours. It has a diameter of 33,000 km and an atmosphere consisting of 93% hydrogen (H2), 7% helium (He), and less than 1% methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), water vapor (H2O) and other trace gases. It is a pale blue color streaked with darker blue blotches, with wispy white high altitude clouds. It retains a family of two major satellites.

Satellites

Bordo retains two major satellites:

(Ia) Grell (UWP Y3A0000-0, orbiting at 8 Diameters/265,000 km)
(Ib) Paria (designated the mainworld, orbiting at 13 Diameters/430,000 km)

Mainworld Data

(Ib) Paria

(Ib) Paria is the outer of the two major moons of (I) Bordo and is designated as the mainworld. It orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 13 diameters (430,000 km), with an orbital period of 43 days 11 hours: it is tidally locked to Bordo. The axial tilt is 4 degrees relative to Bordo. Paria has a diameter of 4,732 km, a density of 4.21 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.28 G. Tidal stresses caused by the gravitational pulls of both Bordo and Lyone cause constant geological activity. The atmosphere is rated as Type, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.68 bar and a composition of 80% nitrogen (N2), 16% oxygen (O2), 2% carbon dioxide (CO2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% water vapor (H2O), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen and the relatively high levels of background radiation: emission rates exceed 5 rads per hour. Around 18% of the surface is covered in sheets of water-ice and small lakes of water kept liquid by geothermal activity. Mean surface temperature: -84°C. The climate is rated as Very Cold and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is active and strong weather systems driven by the star and the seas work across the globe.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 70 million km², Land surface area: 59 million km², Ice coverage 10.7 million km², Liquid water surface area: 300,000 km².

Native Lifeforms

Lyonie-Paria System

Paria, the mainworld, has primitive native life, consisting almost entirely of microscopic multicellular organisms that exist in most ecological niches. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

No information yet available.

World starport

Paria has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World technology level

Paria possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.

World government

Paria is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.
