Paria is a poor, nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
  • This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Natar Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data[edit]

Lyonie-Paria System[edit]

The primary is Lyonie, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.007 Sols, a mass of 0.331 Sols and a diameter of 498,000 km. (I) Bordo, a small gas giant; (Ib) Paria is its outer moon and is designated the mainworld, (II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (III) a ringed large gas giant, (IV) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (V) a small gas giant, (VI) a ringed small ice giant, (VII-I) a vacuum iceworld, (VII-II) a trace atmosphere iceworld, and (IX) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system – orbital position (VIII) is empty. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(I) Bordo[edit]

(I) Bordo is a small gas giant that orbits Lyonie at a mean distance of 0.19 AU (28.4 million km), within the outer system, and has an orbital period of 52 days 14 hours. It has a diameter of 33,000 km and an atmosphere consisting of 93% hydrogen (H2), 7% helium (He), and less than 1% methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), water vapor (H2O) and other trace gases. It is a pale blue color streaked with darker blue blotches, with wispy white high altitude clouds. It retains a family of two major satellites.

Satellites[edit]

Bordo retains two major satellites:

(Ia) Grell (UWP Y3A0000-0, orbiting at 8 Diameters/265,000 km)
(Ib) Paria (designated the mainworld, orbiting at 13 Diameters/430,000 km)

Mainworld Data[edit]

(Ib) Paria[edit]

(Ib) Paria is the outer of the two major moons of (I) Bordo and is designated as the mainworld. It orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 13 diameters (430,000 km), with an orbital period of 43 days 11 hours: it is tidally locked to Bordo. The axial tilt is 4 degrees relative to Bordo. Paria has a diameter of 4,732 km, a density of 4.21 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.28 G. Tidal stresses caused by the gravitational pulls of both Bordo and Lyone cause constant geological activity. The atmosphere is rated as Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.68 bar and a composition of 80% nitrogen (N2), 16% oxygen (O2), 2% carbon dioxide (CO2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% water vapor (H2O), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen and the relatively high levels of background radiation: emission rates exceed 5 rads per hour. Around 18% of the surface is covered in sheets of water-ice and small lakes of water kept liquid by geothermal activity. Mean surface temperature: -84°C. The climate is rated as Very Cold and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is active and strong weather systems driven by the star and the seas work across the globe.

Mainworld Geography and Topography[edit]

Total surface area: 70 million km², Land surface area: 59 million km², Ice coverage 10.7 million km², Liquid water surface area: 300,000 km².

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Lyonie-Paria System[edit]

Paria, the mainworld, has primitive native life, consisting almost entirely of microscopic multicellular organisms that exist in most ecological niches. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

An unpopular propagandist and conspiracy theorist has secreted himself on this world from an undisclosed location. He is attempting to subvert the cultural status quo via his radio show. This is unlikely as his listenership is very low. Imported radio technology is very scarce. The current theory is he broadcasts from a mobile transmitter from within 5,000km of the starport. Most listeners are transient Free trader ship crews passing through the system's minimalistic port. They tend to think the lunatic's ravings are either unintentionally hysterical or merely harmless and annoying.

There is a small colony of eccentric artists gathered here, some with rabid fans. Crafty agents and art dealers have encouraged the establishment of a small art school. Aside from the musicians the art collection has an emphasis on valuing and preserving the art works of non-humans among the alien races of the Distant Fringe. The Sath collection is quite rare and somewhat controversial. Some military academies send field trips here to study the art of the "enemy" in order to better understand them. These trips range from serious and strict learning endeavors to drunken spring breaks. The art school sponsors an annual polar cruise on beautiful sailing vessels assisted by steam power back ups. They alternate from the North to South poles, even years are in the North and odd years are in the South. Underground rail lines run to either pole where water ice is mined and shipped to tiny equatorial enclaves and colonies. Collapsed tunnels from tectonic activity is a constant threat.

The vessels that are chartered feature reinforced steel-bladed skate hulls which can slide across sheets of polar ice pulled by the wind, and float in the limited pockets of geothermally heated liquid water. The hot springs are an important tourist destination. Imported, and preserved rations are a main limiting factor to voyage endurance, aside from fuel for heaters to keep from freezing to death. Bottled methane produced from recycled human waste products are a common fuel source.

Colorfully decorated yet functional masks with backpack atmospheric compressors and integral filtration units are part of the culture whenever outside. Mask patterns help identify family and community associations. Very bulky and thick cold weather survival suits, water proof and sealed head to toe are essential for withstanding limited exposure to the brutal cold which can kill the unprotected in minutes. High tech imported cold weather and water proof boots are in great demand here with fierce brand loyalty. The culinary monotony of microbially based proteins and carbohydrates from the few strains of local microbes which humans can safely ingest severely limits the concept of a restaurant on this world. Imported foodstuff from off world farms are only for the very wealthy elites who throw private dinner parties to demonstrate their power and influence. Real food, even mundane preserved food from off world commands great respect here. Microbiologists are held in very high regard here as well. Heated cavern complexes and underground shelters are important to the local architecture to protect from the radiation and savage environment. Expert diggers and tunnel engineers are constantly being vectored to areas of need, to maintain and repair by a dedicated government bureau with sub agencies.

World starport[edit]

Paria has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World technology level[edit]

Paria possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.

World government[edit]

Paria is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.
