Mainworld Atmosphere

Otrai has a pressure of 0.71 to 1.49 atmospheres. While a Standard Atmosphere does not require survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint.

Specifically, the planet’s atmosphere is tainted by a number of organic poisons. The exact cause of the taint is unknown (and in fact has never been extensively studied), but it is believed to be related to the unusual biochemical basis of life on the world. The Otrai have been genetically engineered to deal with the taint, but most Humans would find exposure to the atmosphere to be fatal within a matter of minutes.

Native Sophont (NIL): Otari

The Otrai are a Human chimera, genetically engineered during the Rule of Man to allow them to survive in a harsh environment.

History & Background / Dossier

World Starport

Otrai (GR 0929) has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World Technology Level

Otrai (GR 0929) possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World Government

Otrai (GR 0929) has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

The Otrai see little need for organized forms of government. They prefer to grant authority only to those with whom they are in direct contact. They keep to simple clan structures based around faith and family. When more complex forms of administration prove necessary (for example, in the few large towns on Otrai) they normally use a council of clan elders chosen for their experience.

World Economy

Otrai has little interaction with the wider universe, and generates comparatively little trade. Their agrarian culture and low technological base limit the opportunities for trade in industrial products. Some Otrai-manufactured goods do find markets on worlds with a similar technological base, where they are well regarded for their attention to environmental concerns.

World Timeline

  • 484: The first attempts to incorporate Otrai into the Third Imperium. These attempts meet with outright hostility. The Otrai want no part of an interstellar state. Valisan Archduchess, a Luriani citizen who governs the Domain of Gateway, chooses to leave the Otrai alone, and engage in low-key efforts to change their views.
  • 568: Attempts at incorporation resume, but once again meet with widespread hostility. Slowly, however, the patient approach is starting to bear fruit.
  • 604: The Imperial Civil War undoes all of the work; the Otrai once again become hostile to incorporation and elect not to accept client-state status.
  • 622: With the end of the Civil War, the Otrai remain just outside the Imperial border and attempts to integrate them are abandoned.
