Orion Nebula

The Orion Nebula (also known as Messier 42, M42, or NGC 1976) is a diffuse nebula which forms the "sword" hanging from the belt of Orion the Hunter, a constellation seen in the night sky of Terra.

Description (Specifications)

The Orion Nebula is one of the brightest nebulae, and is located at a mean distance of 412pc from Terra along a rimward/rimtrailing bearing near the star Sigma Orionis. The nebula is estimated to be about 7.36 pc across. It is the closest region of massive star formation to the world Terra. The Orion Nebula is part of a much larger nebula that is known as the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. The Orion Molecular Cloud Complex extends throughout the Terran-sky constellation of Orion and includes Barnard's Loop, the Horsehead Nebula, M43, M78, and the Flame Nebula.

The Trapezium is a very young open cluster located within the nebula, named for the asterism of its primary four stars. It is a component of the much larger Orion Nebula Cluster, an association of about 2,800 stars within a diameter of 6 pc.
