Oom is a low-population vacuum world, with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts in population size, warranting hazardous environment precautions.

  • Life in a vacuum requires great discipline. After all, it only takes one forgotten seal on a vacuum suit to spell death. Those who survive tend to be very methodically-minded and attentive to small detail.
  • It is a member of the Bright Conclave in the Alasim Subsector of Halcyon Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.

System Data

Onnek-Oom System

The primary is Onnek, a dim red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0025 Sols, a mass of 0.244 Sols, and a diameter of 334,000 km. (I) a very thin atmosphere inner world, (II) a trace atmosphere worldlet, (III) an exotic atmosphere radworld, (IV) a ringed large gas giant, (V) Otoch, a large gas giant: (Vc) Oom is its second moon and is designated the mainworld, and (VI) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Luyt Subsystem

The companion is Luyt, a dim red subdwarf star that orbits Onnek at 82.2 AU (orbital position (XI), 12.3 billion km). It has a luminosity of 0.00103 Sols, a mass of 0.081 Sols, and a diameter of 109,000 km. (I) a vacuum inner world, (II) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (III) a small gas giant, and (IV) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Boram Subsystem

The far companion is Boram, a dim red subdwarf star that orbits Onnek at 615.5 AU (orbital position (XIV), 92.1 billion km). It has a luminosity of 0.00006 Sols, a mass of 0.058 Sols, and a diameter of 73,700 km. (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a trace atmosphere iceworld, (III) a sparse icy planetoid belt, (IV) a large gas giant, and (V) an exotic atmosphere stormworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(V) Otoch

(V) Otoch is a large gas giant that orbits Onnek at a mean distance of 1.19 AU (178 million km), within the outer system, and has an orbital period of 2 years 229 days. It has a diameter of 124,000 km and has an atmosphere consisting of 94% hydrogen (H2), 6% helium (He), and less than 1% methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), ammonia (NH3), water vapor (H2O) and other trace gases. It is a banded brown-tan color with powerful storms concentrated within the polar regions. It retains a family of three major satellites.

Mainworld Data

(Va) Oom

(Va) Oom is the inner of the three major moons of (V) Otoch and is designated the mainworld. It orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 5 diameters (620,000 km), with an orbital period of 38 days 20 hours: it is tidally locked to Otoch. The axial tilt is 8 degrees relative to Otoch. Oom has a diameter of 2,776 km, a density of 6.88 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.27 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Otoch cause near continuous geological activity. Oom's atmosphere is rated as Vacuum. The world has no hydrosphere. Mean surface temperature: -130°C.
