Oenlaetsvaeg is a high-population, pre-industrial garden world with a billion or more sophonts in population size, a near-ideal utopian environment conducive to most sophonts.

  • This world would like to become a major industrial powerhouse in the subsector, but still lacks adequate industry to expand its economy to a pre-rich status. It currently manufactures a significant portion of its economic needs.
  • Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to rise barring outside forces.
  • This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or over technology standards for Charted Space.
  • This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
  • It is a member of the Vargr Extents in the O Subsector of Ghoekhnael Sector.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

"Your enemy is never a villain in his own eyes. Keep this in mind, it may offer a way to make him your friend. If not, you can kill him without hate - and quickly." - Lazarus Long (Robert A. Heinlein)

A dark evil is saturating to critical conditions on OENLAETSVAEG (Goekhnael 1938), a world with a single solar primary, three planetoid belts and three Gas Giants. It features three other planets in-system unsuitable to much more than mining.

  • Prior to 1105, the UWP of this world was A557ADC-F, a Religious Dictatorship. A body of dark priests held absolute control if its people, educating Church doctrines upon the citizenry and backed by their TL-15 enforcer-inquisitors. In 1105 there was a doctrinal schism along interpretation lines and geographic continents and the government fractured into a Balkanized set of continental states trying compete in vile depravities and aggressive development of forces as well as religious ritual.
  • OENLAETSVAEG features a Naval Base and both the Downport and Highport are A-rated. All three receive continuous tribute, support and supply from the entire planet even if the Balkanized continents have differences of opinion. The world’s war machine at 1105 is gaining momentum until mobilization is imminent. The Navy is unequaled anywhere on the Gateway to Ghoekhnael, the 63-world, Jump-1 main that reaches Rimward into Knoellighz Sector.
  • The mainworld has an 8000km diameter and surface gravity of 0.45, is slightly larger than Mars but smaller than Terra. The Thin atmosphere, (0.7 pressure) has yet to become Tainted by the grind of industry thus rating the world with Pre-Industrial (Pi) code. This may change the atmosphere to 4 circa 1130s and the Virus Era, earning the world the full Industrial (In) code.
  • The Temperate climate has yielded a Garden (Ga) world code which can easily be mistaken as a peaceful planet were it not for the fleets amassing in high orbit.
  • The 30 billion Vargr here have built a malignant society that lives in subterranean caverns left over from extensive mining, surface cities with tall skyscrapers (and a few space-scrapers), and contragravity floating cities in the upper troposphere. Multiple orbital platforms in addition to the Highport have eased the overcrowding, High-Population (Hi) conditions somewhat as more zealots enlist in the world’s Naval forces.
  • Come 1105 and by Church tenant, all Vargr are to undergo mandatory Augmentations such as:
    • Urzaeng Modification
    • Strength
    • Dexterity
    • Endurance
    • Intelligence (scientist corps only)
    • Subdermal Armor
    • Wafer Jack and Wafer Technology

Most comply with the cybernetic augmentations out of fear of the Church, some out of outward sign of loyalty, a good portion yielding to the modifications in zealous devotion and few Alphas so as to stay on top of the hierarchy.

  • It is OENLAETSVAEG that is responsible for sponsoring the Corsair activity within its Jump-4 neighborhood and seeks to employ more Corsairs and their bases as religious Privateers of a sort. Most famous of their tactics is to try and encourage local world, Naval forces to chase the Corsairs back to OENLAETSVAEG where a massive fleet awaits them. Those ships without proper IFF transponder signals (issued by this world), failing to surrender, be boarded and enslaved are destroyed outright, one ship at a time by concentrated fire. After then, salvage crews scrape the derelicts from the scene, sterilizing the battle zones for the next victim vessel to jump in.

Several Cultural and Religious Details have erupted from OENLAETSVAEG. Referees may select or use all of the following:

Religious: Racial supremacy, the will to go beyond Ancients’ design, conquer the weak. Racial ID rules all.

Radical Atheism: Weaponized predator is the generalized template citizens are molded by the Church. Since the Terran chaser, canid was used by the Ancients, OENLAETSVAEG seeks to improve on the final, racial product, a killer-bred species.

Ritualized: The Church dictates a ritualized, bureaucratic and planet-wide set of meditation, chants and other acts of devotion to prove a citizen’s loyalty and zealotry.

Conservative: OENLAETSVAEG resists any form of change in its outlook, mindset, beliefs and functional parameters until forced to do so by the oncoming Virus doomslayers and Empire-builder Strains.

Taboo: Speaking openly of mercy and going soft on anyone, friend or foe invites violence, maiming or even death upon the speaker. Weakness in conversation is outlawed.

Deceptive: Traffic unaware of this world is allowed to land. None escape the canyon Downport, the hangar blast doors of the Highport and certainly not the amassed Naval fleet and empowered Corsairs.

Violent: Infighting is a daily sight and half the time such Charisma duels become life-or-death contests, the loser not having to worry about its loss of Charisma.

Obsessed: OENLAETSVAEG Church and its fanatic citizens have an obsessive desire to slay all weaklings or enslave useful ones for the most demeaning task sets that continue to spotlight such perceived weaknesses.

At War: In 1124, OENLAETSVAEG engages a war of conquest with every other world in its path.

Unusual Custom: The Downport and Highport both are dark temples dedicated to the Church’s worldview of entropy, destruction, enslavement, torture and atrocity upon its enemies. Trade is not known at either location.

Unusual Custom: All citizens are by law Augmented and converted to the Church doctrine, (or the local, continental doctrine). Those refusing are assumed to be embracing weakness and are worth only of enslavement or sacrifice on the bloody altars of the Church.

Unusual Custom: Citizens born to this world are raised by the Church and State. No families exist, only packs. Litters are separated, emancipated from their mothers and assigned initial packs to be reared in the doctrine of the local Church. Packs can re-form or trade members, exiles can be taken up into new packs. However, families are unknown on OENLAETSVAEG.

Unusual Custom: Cannibalism of the weak. Slaves and captured prisoners can often be sacrificed on altars and then brought to the table afterwards in nightmarish feasts, what little positive attributes are believed to be absorbed by the strong.

Unusual Custom: Trade. There is none. Citizens take what they want if they dare to do so within the boundaries of Church Law.

Unusual Custom: Sex. Females must give litters to the Church and State. None know their offspring as they recover from birthing. Pups are distributed immediately for doctrinal care and rearing. Many females fight for their mates or fight not to mate at all.

Unusual Custom: Conspiracy in the 1130s erupts as the Church and State must integrate Empire Builder virus Strains that arrive, allowing Vampire fleets access and inclusion in the crusades of OENLAETSVAEG.

World Starport[edit]

Oenlaetsvaeg has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Technology Level[edit]

Oenlaetsvaeg possesses a Technology Level of TL–15 or TL-F in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government[edit]

Oenlaetsvaeg has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

World Economy[edit]

Yet to be properly calculated, perhaps due to the dangers of proximity or asking, OENLAETSVAEG has been estimated to land between -10,800 and 10,800 Resource Units. Due to the amassing fleets this high-tech world produces, it is assumed that the figure is at least positive output, which is frightening to its Jump-6 neighborhood.

Trade Data[edit]

The Trade Routes, had OENLAETSVAEG become a benevolent world instead of a malignancy, would have landed on Cyan routes and been an economic powerhouse instead of a military war machine.

World Demographics[edit]

World Culture[edit]

Based on Importance {Ix} of {4} and this world's Population of A (30 billion Vargr), it can be expected that OENLAETSVAEG has:

  • Homogeneity 5-15
  • Acceptance 14 (this world greedily accepts converts to its Church and State ideology, often beginning as slaves and working upwards through acts of depravity)
  • Strangeness -5 to +5
  • Symbols 10-20 (this figure is based on this world's Tech Level as a mean number with -5/+5 error)

The Black Codex[edit]

The Black Codex – This text is a scientific collection of studies on Vargr physiology, physical potential, mental aptitudes, social structures and the need for Charisma to bring all into focus in order to exceed the Ancients’ original intent. To make the most of a life with the Ancients gone to parts unknown, the Vargr must abandon higher morals, give into their passions, instinct; logic is for science and the researcher caste support, not supplant that inner, primal drive. Everything the Church learns and accepts in this worldview is recorded in this codex.

Historical Eras[edit]

Classic Era: 1105

The Church fractures, Balkanizing the government along with interpretations of Church doctrine as to what depravity(s) best represents the religion and worldview. The governments do not fight, but compete by pitting champions and slave chattel in gladiatorial slaves against rival continents and sects. Depravity escalates in this time.

Captured families’ younger members are forced to kill their parents in hopes of being spared, enslaved and given a future chance to be Augmented, convert and rise in ranks.

Conflict atrocity is required to rise in ranks. Only the most damning acts are considered. Naval and Corsair units and squadrons are especially merciless. This “Path Without Soul” helps endear these Vargr to Virus later.

Corsairs continue to plague the Jump-2 Neighborhood. They lure nearby navies chasing them back to OENLAETSVAEG for capture, torture, re-education and possibly conversion or enslavement.

In this Era the Brzeh Council and the Democracy of Greats first learn of OENLAETSVAEG.

Empress Wave: 1113

The Empress Wave compounds and aggravates OENLAETSVAEG, its dark priests taking the Wave as a sign of impetus to punish the weak, prod the strong and step up its war machine. Those psionics-trained and full Psions are given nigh little care and most go insane or are sacrificed on altars the world over.

Rebellion Era: 1116

OENLAETSVAEG spent these years in the full aftermath effects of the Empress Wave.

Hard Times Era: 1120

OENLAETSVAEG begins a locust plague campaign in 1124 to ravage whatever it wants from the weaker worlds in the so-called Gateway to Ghoekhnael. It is resisted by the Coreward Brzeh Council and the exploratory Democracy of Greats to Rimward. Help from interstellar, corporate entities such as the Cornered Industries Trade Consortium and the Dhourraz Cornucopia lend assets at cost. Finally, aid from the Zhodani Consulate is begged to stem the tide of this nightmare conquest.

Virus Era: 1130s

Virus arrives and is quickly taken as an ally, the temples unanimously welcoming the later Strains of Empire Builder and later God virus Strains as an unholy upgrade to already existing religious infrastructure. Scientists corps gain much clout in this time as liaisons to Virus and later to arriving Vampire fleets taking on crews. The entire world of OENLAETSVAEG becomes a pit of despair for the growing infection and aggression. Both the Brzeh Council and Democracy of Greats must accept help from an odd ally, the Zhodani Consulate, during this war-torn period. It is during this stretch into the New Era that the UWP of this world returns to A557ADC-F as the Church resolves its doctrinal difficulties under the insistence of Virus' ideal of deadly-efficient operating systems. Ofttimes, it is unknown who is running the empire, the priesthood, warlords or the Strains of Virus.
