Nexus is a rich, pre-agricultural world with a moderate population over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts in size.

  • The world's agricultural industry is growing and some economists forecast an explosion in this world's agribusiness in the near future as new agro-technology and a more capable labor force are imported.
  • This is a rich world with a prosperous and thriving world economy.
  • This world has high-grade living conditions with a good climate and a non-harmful environment. As such, this world is much sought after with large queues for immigration here.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Sena Subsector of Halcyon Sector.
  • This world-system hosts a Military Base, usually associated with military ground forces, which may be located on or off-world.

System data

The primary is Stirret, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 1.102 Sols, a mass of 1.02 Sols and a diameter of 1.4 million km. The inner system consists of (I, II) two rocky vacuum worlds and (III) a rocky thin atmosphere world. (IV) Nexus orbits in the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (V) a large exotic atmosphere world and (VI, VII) two small gas giants form the outer system. Nexus and all of the outer worlds retain satellites.

The companion is Holos, a red subdwarf star that orbits Stirret at a mean distance of 160 AU (orbital position (X), 23.9 billion km) and has an orbital period of approximately 2000 years. (I) a rocky trace atmosphere world, and (II) a large ringed gas giant form the outer system. The gas giant retains a family of satellites.

Mainworld data

(IV) Nexus is designated the mainworld. It orbits Stirret at a mean distance of 0.97 AU (145 million km) and has an orbital period of 358 days 17 hours. It has a rotation period of 26.1 hours and an axial tilt of 18.4 degrees. Nexus has a diameter of 11,440 km, a density of 5.65 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.91 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Dense, with a surface pressure of 2.1 bar and a composition of 79% nitrogen, 20% oxygen, and 1% argon, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. Approximately 81% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 1.5m. Mean surface temperature: 26°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and powerful weather systems, driven by the star and the warm oceans, sweep across the globe. The climate is seasonal and weather patterns follow regular cycles during the local year.

Satellites:

Nexus retains two moons, small close Ereget and large distant Rumuu:

(IVa) Ereget (G310368-B, orbiting at 5 Diameters/57,000 km).
Egeret Downport is frequented by military and mercenary personnel and has a particularly bad reputation. Large regions of the surface are set aside as military training areas.
(IVb) Rumuu (F544668-B, orbiting at 40 Diameters/460,000 km).
Rumuu has primitive native life. It is the site of the main prison facility in the system.

Mainworld geography and topography

Total surface area: 411 million km², Land surface area: 78 million km², Water surface area: 333 million km². Three small rugged continents (named Pardo, Chell and Manion) lie in the southern hemisphere and one large continent (named Nostra), extending from the northern pole to the equator, dominates the northern hemisphere. There are a number of subcontinental landmasses and large islands as well as many archipelagos. The main bodies of water are the Ocean of Storms and the smaller Mare Serpentes, divided by chains of volcanic islands. Small icecaps are located at both poles. Many regions have volcanic zones and seismic events such as earthquakes are relatively common.

Native lifeforms

Nexus has abundant native life. The local flora has a tendency towards tall narrow stems and globular leaves: foliage is generally green in colour. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal. The majority of local fauna follows the body pattern Bilateral HS-TB-NN-LL-T, with bony interiors, hemolymph fluids, and skin exteriors. Local lifeforms can be digested by humans, though they taste unpleasant without specialised processing and cooking.

History & Background

Nexus is a pleasant, developed, wealthy commercial hub and economic center.

World starport

Nexus has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • Status: peace footing (government modifier x1.15).
  • Construction Restrictions:
    • Maximum TL: TL 12
    • Maximum Jump: Jump-2
    • Maximum Hull Size: 999,999 dTons
  • Naval Capacity: 1,035,000 dTons
  • Mercantile Capacity: 5,175,000 dTons

Orbital Ports

Nexus has three major orbital port facilities.

  • Lazarus Orbital: the most luxurious of the orbital ports, mushroom-shaped, in geosynchronous orbit above Nexus, and specifically catering to passengers. It is built around the Grand Atrium, a concourse surrounded by busy malls and promenades that offer spectacular vistas of the world below. Shuttle services between Lazarus Orbital and the surface depart regularly. Certain berthing arms are set aside for liners and other large prestige passenger vessels. Internal security is extremely tight and no personal weapons are allowed within the port facilities. Luxury apartments are available for hire within Lazarus Orbital.
  • Transit Main: the working commercial orbital port facility, located in a higher orbital position than Lazarus. It consists of a huge central hub surrounded by berthing arms and fuelling points. The major part of the hub is fuel tankage, cargo storage facilities, and hanger space. There are large accommodation sections and a "budget" passenger terminal.
  • MilPort: a large armored station in orbit around (IVa) Ereget, operated and funded by both the Nexus Trade Authority and private business. Although it is primarily a navy/marine base it contains dedicated Starmerc facilities and serves as a mercenary clearing-house. It is the operational headquarters of Nexus Customs and Quarantine. Military hardware, equipment, ammunition and vehicles of all kinds may be traded for on MilPort. A number of squadrons of interceptors are kept on alert.

Surface Facilities

All of the large urban centers on the continent of Nostra are major transport hubs and are served by spaceport facilities. Brokerage Down is the main surface starport: it is located on a large island and access is strictly controlled.

Shipyards:

  • Nexus Yard: one of the leading shipyards in Halcyon Sector with a reputation for excellent build quality and advanced designs. Nexus-built vessels are considered superior to Padori-built ships on a one-to-one basis. The shipyards themselves consist of surface docks (accounting for around 30% of the yards capacity) and the enormous gantries, control hubs, and tubular construction berths of the orbital facilities (accounting for about 70% of the yards capacity).

World technology level

Nexus possesses a Technology Level of TL–12 or TL-C in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government

Nexus is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

Higher Government

The world's government is the Nexus Trade Authority, usually abbreviated to NTA. It meets in the Palace of Peresior, a fortified complex of elegant buildings located on a small island sitting two kilometers off of the coast of Brokerage, the capital city. The heart of the palace is the magnificent Senate Hall.

The executive branch of the NTA is called the Chamber and is responsible for ensuring that the laws of Nexus are obeyed. The Grand Arbiter is the head of the Chamber and is assisted by the the Vice-Arbiter, First Senators, and heads of independent Offices, who form a committee called the Cabinet headed by one of their number who has been nominated as the First Minister. The Cabinet are chosen by the Grand Arbiter from a list provided by the Senate, the legislative body. The military High Command answers to the Cabinet and the Grand Arbiter.

The Senate, the legislative branch of the government, is a 180-member unicameral house vested in the Senate Hall of Nexus. The Senators are selected from an approved list based on their ability and are confirmed in the role by approval ratings based on surveys carried out among the public. First Senators are chosen to head government Departments and sit in the Chamber. Legislation is voted on in the Senate Hall, then sent to the Grand Arbiter, who takes the advice of the Cabinet and either approves or dismisses it.

Judiciary

The judicial branch is represented by the Supreme Court Of Justice, a 16-member body divided into three supreme sectors:

  • Civil Sector: Presides over all topics related to civil rights and commercial law.
  • Criminal Sector: Presides over all topics relating to criminal law.
  • Constitutional and Social Sector: Presides over all topics relating to constitutional rights and labor law.

Judges are chosen from among legal experts and appointed by the Grand Arbiter. The role is for life.

Gendarmerie

The police force of Nexus, charged with the prevention and detection of crime and the maintenance of public order. As well as the various precincts monitored and patrolled by the regular Police Force, it includes the Central Investigation Department, the Organised Crime Agency, the Special Operations unit, Traffic and Logistics Control, and Psi Branch. The Gendarmerie can call on the services of specialist Heavy Assault Teams if necessary.

  • Gendarmerie Officers wear a smartly tailored uniform and body armor, they have reliable commo and data links, they are armed, and they are equipped with performance vehicles.

Bureaucratic Departments

The government of Nexus is divided into a large number of Departments, each headed by a First Senator and responsible for an aspect of social, economic and political life on the world. Some of the most important include the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Defense, the Department of the Interior, the Office of Justice, the Ministry of Commerce, the Department of Production, the Department of Agriculture, and the Ministry of Culture. Departments employ huge numbers of staff, keep extensive records, and have sweeping powers.

Board of Approval

Nexus commercial fleet designs must be authorized and approved for construction by the Board of Approval, an independent office directly answerable to the NTA. Certification provided by the NTA / Board of Approval is held as the very standard of excellence in commercial ship building, and all craft manufactured in the system must meet its strict criteria. Uncertified vessels (craft that have not been built in the system) must agree to an inspection before being granted permission to use the port facilities: vessels which don't measure up can only remain within the system for as long as it takes to transfer cargo and refuel, with those services being provided by tankers and lighters. Non-compliance brings the attention of Nexus Fleet Forces.

World military

Nexus Fleet Forces NFF, have defensive jurisdiction within the system. Nexus Marines and Army battalions rely on them for transport and support. There is a home fleet which acts as a strategic reserve and patrol task forces dispatched as needed to address Nexus security missions.

World economy

  • Resources: B (Abundant)
  • Labor: 7 (Tens of millions)
  • Infrastructure: D (Comprehensive)
  • Efficiency: +5 (Very advanced)

Nexus remains primarily agricultural, growing a broad range of flora for a wide variety of uses. Its key "natural resource" exports include hydrocarbons, minerals, precious metals, lumber, processed food ingredients, textiles and clothing. Nexus has a strong industrial base, producing machinery, equipment and tools, vehicles, electronics, computers, robots, vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, and starships. Nexus has a substantial financial services sector and is considered to be a tax haven.

Trade data

Nexus sits at the junction of four separate Star Lanes - the Barabek Loop, the Elemid Trace, the Long Line, and the Rasand Link. It is a major trade and commercial center and sees a huge amount of interstellar traffic. There are thousands of Brokerage houses buying and selling goods and offering contracts for transshipment and delivery. Legal representation is available everywhere and is widely advertised. Almost any commodity or service can be found on Nexus, if you have the credits and the right contacts.

Nexus is the location of the head offices of a number of large companies:

World demographics

Population: approximately 904,000,000.

  • Native Non-Human Races:
    • Hoppers: 6.2 million (0.66% of the population), concentrated within hives in human communities.
    • Esaran: 4.5 million (0.49% of the population), primarily found in large canton-districts in human cities.
    • Meroquan: 35,000 (less than 0.01% of the population), largely concentrated within the city of Brokerage.
    • Temelik: 7,500 (less than 0.01% of the population), widely dispersed across the world.
    • Edur: 5,000 (less than 0.01% of the population), largely concentrated within the city of Brokerage.

Urbanization

Nostra, the main continent, is relatively heavily populated. Much of the continent is given over to agriculture (cultivating flora) and small rural towns lie among vast automated plantations. Larger urban areas are industrial centers. They are linked by efficient roads and Maglev networks and served by their own surface port facilities. The main city is Brokerage, a huge metropolis and the seat of the government. The continent of Pardo and the numerous archipelagos and islands around it are lush tropical paradises where real estate can cost billions. It is the preferred location of the rich, the titled, and celebrities. The continents of Chell and Manion, lying further to the south and with colder environments, are maintained as pristine wildernesses.

The main city is Brokerage (population 15 million), located on the eastern coast of Nostra with a large maritime harbour: it was originally the Startown for the world's surface port facilities but is now a huge urban area divided into administrative districts. The Financial district includes the Nexus Trade Center, the Nexus Stock Exchange, the World Reserve Bank, the Chamber of Commerce, the Sena Institute of Business, the First Bank of Nexus, as well as the headquarters of many other large businesses and organisations. The greater Brokerage region is heavily industrialised and has huge warehousing districts.

  • Brokerage Down, the main surface starport facility, is located on a large island of the same name lying a few hundred km from Brokerage. Much of the surface of the island is given over to cargo holding facilities and warehouses. The island has a large maritime port.
  • The original Scavenger Season Downport facilities form the core of the Museum of Nexus.

World culture

  • Homogeneity: B (Discordant)
  • Acceptance: B (Extremely friendly)
  • Strangeness: 9
  • Symbols: F

Nexus is intensely mercantile and the government sponsors and fosters this, offering tax breaks and incentives to encourage business. Nexus is the home world of a large number of interstellar corporations and has a huge number of domestic companies and businesses. Malls and shops are everywhere, and even on the streets there are markets and vendors trading and hawking their wares. Buildings are adorned with gigantic advertising screens, business logos and banners. Entertainment and media is sponsored by companies and programmes and games are regularly interrupted by advertising.

In the earliest days of its settlement there were far more males than females on Peresior / Nexus: in order to attract women, financial incentives and benefits, including luxurious accommodations, were offered to members of that gender who chose to settle on the world. Though the time of paying female settlers has long gone, the tradition of extravagant living quarters for women continues.

Historical data

The system was first surveyed sometime around 2400AD and named "Peresior": this remained as the official name of the world until the beginning of the 56th Century.

The Peresior system was first settled circa 3385AD, during the civil wars. It remained as a backwater and eventually became barren during the Dark Age. It was the site of a small Scavenger outpost during the early years of the 48th century. The world was pleasant and the Scavenger community grew into an established settlement with thousands of inhabitants.

Peresior briefly served as the base of a corsair group that preyed on Bright Expansion shipping. At the turn of the 6th millennium the pirates were dramatically and publicly removed by Peresior's government (through their use of hired mercenary and Starmerc units leading locally raised forces) in the so-called "First Battle of Peresior", establishing the world as a safe haven in a lawless region and saving it from potential punitive reprisals from Bright Expansion.

Peresior remained free of direct Development Organization interest, though it made good profits trading with Bright Expansion, and focused on upgrading its port facilities, infrastructure and technology, becoming a regular stop for commercial shipping of all kinds. It gained a reputation as a mercenary center and a safe haven for the remainder of the Golden Age. Settlement spread across Nostra, the main continent, and by the 52nd century the world had become agricultural. With its increasing importance as a commercial hub and as the meeting-point of various trading routes, the name "Nexus" became common.

It continued to grow throughout the first quarter of the 6th millennium though its population remained relatively small. The world saw huge immigration over the Scybrian Wars period as refugees fled the coreward battlefields and entrepreneurs and businesses sought a more stable environment in which to work. The only major action that occurred in the system during the whole conflict was in 5428AD, during the First Rissa War: local forces successfully fought off a Scybrian raid seeking to capture or destroy Corolian assets at the orbital port.

The name "Nexus" was officially adopted in a state ceremony on New Years Day in 5500AD. The world continued to grow as a trade and transportation hub.
