System Data[edit]

The highport was originally a 4,000t freighter that brought the initial camp to Negril and then had its drives removed once in a stable orbit. Fuel, accommodations are all available although Station Keeper Festanitri will charge high prices for both. As for cargo opportunities, there is little here but desperate adventurers may be able to sell goods here and take data off station. The station also boasts two shuttles which ferry goods to and from the planet and for a small fee, passengers may be taken.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Negril 0120 C652593-4 Ni 912 Xx K4 V

Negril is an extremely rocky planet but with almost nothing by way of metals or even rare earths. The thin atmosphere makes life difficult in all but the deep canyons that what little water the planet has managed to erode in great number. In these canyons, vegetation grows and a small biosphere has evolved. It is in these canyons that the Chirpers have made their home. The air pressure is thin but breathable by Humans and most other species and the vegetation can even grow quite thick in some areas.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

The world is a single mono-continent dotted with un-numbered small lakes and several small seas. The planet has a fantastically complex weather system and bodies of water are known to change very rapidly under the right conditions.

Mainworld Map[edit]

Native Lifeforms[edit]

The planet's biosphere has not yet been adequately studied. It has the presence of many kinds of lifeforms, although their complexity is not well studied.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

World Starport[edit]

Negril has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Technology Level[edit]

Negril possesses a Technology Level of TL–3.

World Government[edit]

Negril is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.

Power Factions[edit]

  1. The University of Altard follows and enforces its own rules on the planet, although since there are usually less than 100 researchers in the system at any one time this isn’t usually too difficult. The starport isn’t armed and it is assumed that as the scientists have little of saleable value that it is unlikely that they will be attacked. They will insist on visitors following their guidelines though, especially where the Chirpers might be concerned. There are three power brokers (if that is what one would call them) from the university. The first is holds the title of Station Keeper and is one of the 15 personnel who live and work at the small highport in orbit. The Station Keeper is responsible for maintaining the University infrastructure and all ships entering or leaving the system. The current Station Keeper is a young man named Onilutu Festanitri and is quite vain and ambitious who is certainly not above giving travelers a hard time if they seem less than impressed with his domain ‘as he sees it anyway’.
  2. The second power broker is also on the station with the title of Supply Master. The Supply Master is responsible for all of the materiel in the system from the university. The current Supply Master is a young woman named Barana Tel Linnu and has been only recently appointed to the position and is already out of her depth. She is constantly badgered by Festanitri and has been forced to appease him more than the Research Director as he looms as the closest (and thus greatest) threat to her career. She has also already started covering up her mistakes and blaming her staff for errors.
  3. The final power broker is San Barrynight. An aged but well respected and fit scientist who is in charge of all research on the planet. He is very much a hands on researcher and spends almost all of his time at the downport/research station. He is well liked by the scientists that work there and very protective of the Chirpers he is studying. He has little idea of what is happening at the high port but is starting to become annoyed with supply shortfalls and lack of proper materiel. His position is that of Research Director.
  4. The Chirpers on the other hand have their own system which the researchers are trying to uncover. They have identified no less than 22 distinctive groups of Chirpers who seem more or less independent of each other. They seem to have little communication or trade but the scientists have noted how difficult it is to keep track of every Chirpers movements, especially if it doesn’t want to be seen.

World Economy[edit]

Negril Economy: The scientists are completely supported from the University of Altard on Okaya and while the data they gain is quite worth while in the scientific community, it has little value on the open market. The Chirpers produce enough to survive but little else and while there may be some trade between Chirper groups, there is little that they would have of interest off planet.

Historical Data[edit]

The Negril system was initially surveyed in -393 and nothing of any great interest was found beyond a dry, rocky planet with a thin atmosphere. No resources of any great merit were detected so there was little interest in the planet.

Another survey in 810 from the now well populated world of Okaya was more extensive and discovered a large Chirper colony in one of the deep canyons. Interest in the Chirpers was immediate as not much was known of this species at the time. However, early researches managed to startle the creatures badly on their first contact and they left the planet within a year.

In 895, the Altard University of Life Sciences petitioned the government of Okaya to set up their own study group. This well funded group set up a small highport of reasonable quality as well as a landing field and research camp 35 kilometers from the canyon where the Chirpers were originally observed. They have been rewarded with excellent data and now have knowledge of many other Chirper groups in the area. Scientists of this group are regarded as the most knowledgeable of Chirpers in the sector although they admit that there are several mysteries about the species that still elude them – such as how the Chirpers came to be on this planet.

The scientists estimate the population of Chirpers at something approaching one million but have sighted less than half that and their data is based on Chirpers being located in all of the deep, wet canyons capable of supporting Chirper colonies. They have certainly seen that Chirpers do seem to exist even in canyons quite distant.

In order to aid their studies, the scientists have recently and slowly managed to make contact with one of the nearby Chirper colonies. Both groups are always cautious and courteous to each other but both groups seem to be benefiting from the contact and a closer bond seems to be developing. However, some of the scientific group are concerned what this outside influence will have on their data.

The scientific group on the surface is quite protective of the Chirpers and very keen to protect the aliens that they study. Many have also grown attached to them and will work hard to protect them at all costs. Being so focused on their studies has made the scientists somewhat naïve and have little idea of what is happening outside their research.
