Misgiven is a poor, nonindustrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.
  • This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.
  • It is a member of the Solomani Confederation in the Sephi Hydra Subsector of Aldebaran Sector.

System Data[edit]

4 Gas Giants — 0 Planetoid Belts — 8 Other Worlds
Misgiven system can be generalized as a large pile of large rocks, with a host of fuel stations thrown in.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Misgiven is aptly named, as both a Twilight Zone world and Hell world.

The atmosphere is largely argon-radon with 10% oxygen mixed with a taint of lead-polonium dust. The dust would normally be the danger except that the radon levels are high enough to make the alpha-radiation the larger danger once breathed into most lungs. The dust itself is extremely toxic, and becomes a danger during any wind event. In some cases, even a casual footfall can stir the dust to dangerous levels.

Remember that Misgiven is a twilight world, with the typical katabatic winds that can be driven from cold to hot pole at erratic speeds and directions.

Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]

Misgivens topology is mostly an impressive collection of impact craters. The spinward side of planet is visibly deformed from the impact of another planet-sized body in ancient times.

The cold pole has a substantial icepack.

Mainworld Map[edit]

The recommended landing area (ahem) down port is the twilight trailing point.

A packed soil road leads to a excavated mountain city of approximately a million souls.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

This world is a radioactive rock. No indigenous life.

World Starport[edit]

Misgiven has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

There are 5 landing areas capable of servicing up to 800 ton starships, and 10 more for ships at or below the 400 ton mark. There is unrefined fuel available, but in limited quantities. There is a 3 dome official welcome center with official processing, living/hoteling quarters, a restaurant, and a maintenance dome that can house a 400 ton vessel in a pressure seal. A small reactor building is visible approximately a half kilometer away.

All areas are interconnected by pressurized tunnels. Each tunnel entryway is equipped with a shower-vacuum cleansing area; everyone is required to spend a minimum of a 15-minute cycle undergoing decontamination before entering the tunnel proper. Additional cleansing stations are provided at regular intervals in the tunnels and in the dome structures. To be clear, it is expected that everyone entering will be wearing a suitable vaccsuit. Lockers are provided for visitors both at each terminal and in the living dome. For those unwise enough to enter having braved the exterior without a vaccsuit, the decontamination requires full processing (and possible destruction of) any clothing and the individual is then subjected to both a supervised cleansing and medical evaluation...and possibly a psychological evaluation.

The starport staff has made it known to us that they can provide and install a functional fission power plant into visiting starships for a reasonable price. The first fuel load out is included. Advanced operation training is also included for engineering personnel.

World Technology Level[edit]

Misgiven possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World Government[edit]

Misgiven is governed by a Corporate Polity with a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. A company town, or world. The typical corporate run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.

The Misgiven government has the original corporate structure, but seems to function more as a non-charismatic dictatorship. Still, the dictat here holds the title of CEO of the Misgiven Radiological Corporation. The government has the overriding purpose of ensuring the survival of the corporation and its staff. The corporation is also employee-owned, which makes corporate yearly operation meetings a bit interesting. Note that the Corporate Board has 13 positions with an elected chairperson position. The board selects the CEO and can dismiss them at will. 3 chairs are up for election each year in a rotating fashion, resulting in a progressing rotation of members.

World Law Level[edit]

Misgiven has a moderate law level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Light assault weapons, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

Weapons are common, but ammunition is not. Still, everyone tends to be polite.

World Military[edit]

See Law level.

World Economy[edit]

Lead ingots, uranium yellowcake, and purified radon gas are available here, cash and carry. Other metallic heavy metals are available in various quantities and purities. With the correct contacts, you may find access to surprising products indeed.

Trade Data[edit]

Misgiven is a treasure-house of radioactives, and the inhabitants make the most of it.

World Demographics[edit]

Humaniti 90%

Aslan 5%

Other 5%

The Misgiven tend to be very healthy and resilient members of their races. Medical information gathered shows them to be unusually resistant to cancers and having an very strong immune and cellular repair systems. That said, the human population tends to be have a trimodal death pattern:

a) Early 30s

b) Early 60s

c) 90+

seemingly related to when their immune system becomes unable to suppress the cancers endemic to the very high background radiation levels.

World Culture[edit]

Now, the colonists are surviving on plants grown hydroponically using a vertical farming technique. The living quarters are bright, cheery, and comfortable. As a society, they have an excess of energy, and enough food, but they are having trouble bringing in other desired products. High technology in T7 - T10 range has a definite shelf life due to the radiation, unless shielded, as so is highly prized. Foreign cultural materials and literature are likewise craved by most of the population.

Urbanization[edit]

The Atomic Caverns of Misgiven were originally created by 100 to 1000kT detonations under the largest mountain range near the twilight line. Over the last 40 years, extensive construction has built an internal cityscape that promises to grow into something truly impressive. Also, parts of the outer shells still glow, if you know where to look.

Historical Data[edit]

The population of original desperate settlers were absolutely cold-blooded and fearless. 60 years ago, their objective was survival of the fittest, with the strategy of producing high-grade radioactives cheaply and selling them at high prices.

The Originals used atomic charges to quickly create living caverns within the largest mountain range, knowing that they would not be habitable for at least 20 years. In the meantime, they built plastic-based dome habitats brought from Orient. These domes are still extant in the coldside valleys near the caverns.

The settlers brought their own advanced fission reactors, mostly fast-spectrum molten-salt reactors (MSR) which are easily refuelable from local resources.

By the time that the Atomic Caverns became habitable, the entire area was mapped geologically and core-sampled. Manufacturing equipment needed for mining, distillation/separations, and packaging were ready. The first loads of materials was quickly ready for sale.

The trick was that the corporation that had signed the contracts for pickup and delivery, with an option for downport construction had suffered huge losses in the meantime, and quietly "forgot" about the colony and wrote it off as loss. It didn't save them, as they folded not ten years later. The colonists figured this out 5 years after that point.
