The Metlay class Fleet Escort was designed by the Imperial Navy's own Bureau of Ships in 872. With Jump-4 capability, the Metlay is still capable of performing valuable work for the Imperial Navy, although most new construction is for frontier planetary navies. Members of the class are traditionally named after posthumous winners of the Imperial Navy's Medal for Conspicuous Gallantry. Normal operation of the vessel (full maneuver power and life support) requires 66% of the power plant capacity, and the rated endurance is based on this figure.
Primary armanent on a Metlay class escort is a meson bay weapon and four missile launch bays. There are 10 triple turrets organized into one battery all mounting lasers for missile defense. There are 40 triple turrets organized into four batteries all mounting sandcasters for missle and beam defense. The ship also mounts a factor-6 meson screen and nuclear damper, both with backup systems.
