Metanu is a poor, pre-industrial hellworld with a population struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants.
  • This world would like to become a major industrial powerhouse in the subsector, but lacks the population and resources to build an adequate workforce and industrial business sector.
  • This is a "low technology" world with technology competencies well below technology standards for Charted Space.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Esqua Subsector of Far Home Sector.

System Data

Tasmal-Metanu System

The primary is Tasmal, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.352 Sols, a mass of 0.774 Sols and a diameter of 1.168 million km. The inner system consists of (II) a standard atmosphere desert hospitable world – orbital position (I) is empty. (III) Metanu orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IV) a vacuum worldlet, and (VI) an exotic atmosphere stormworld form the outer system – orbital position (V) is empty. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Arlam Subsystem

The companion is Arlam, an ordinary red main sequence star that lies approximately 79.6 AU (orbital position (XI), 11.9 million km) from Tasmal. It has a luminosity of 0.04 Sols, a mass of 0.489 Sols and a diameter of 764,000 km. (I) a thin atmosphere hospitable world orbits in the habitable zone. (II) a vacuum worldlet, and (III) a dense stony planetoid belt form the outer system. Neither world retains satellites.

  • The two stars orbit a barycenter located at around 29.3 AU (orbital position (X), 4.38 billion km). They have an orbital period around one another of 141 years 45 days.

Mainworld Data

(III) Metanu

(III) Metanu is designated the mainworld. It orbits Tasmal at a mean distance of 0.69 AU (103.2 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 237 days 23 hours and a rotation period of 18 hours. The axial tilt is 8 degrees. Metanu has a diameter of 7,877 km, a density of 5.44 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.61 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.66 bar and a composition of 84% nitrogen (N2), 15% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen. Approximately 20% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges are around 0.75m. Mean surface temperature: 13°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Cool and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is active and moderate weather systems, driven by the star and the seas, work cross the globe.

Satellites

Metanu retains two natural satellites, an ice-capped trace atmosphere worldlet named Bubaris and a cratered vacuum worldlet named Varid:

(Va) Bubaris (UWP Y311000-0, orbiting at 9 Diameters/70,000 km).
(Vb) Varid (UWP Y100000-0, orbiting at 35 Diameters/275,000 km).

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 195 million km², Land surface area: 154 million km², Water surface area: 39 million km².

Native Lifeforms

Tasmal-Metanu System

The hot marginally hospitable desert world lying in orbital position (II) (within the H– region of the inner system) has primitive thermophile native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that thrive in the harsh conditions. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

Metanu, the mainworld, has extensive native life, consisting of microscopic organisms, stromatolite-parallels and primitive flora that can be found in almost every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

Arlam Subsystem

The temperate hospitable world lying in orbital position (I) (within the habitable zone) has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the subsystem is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

No information yet available.

World starport

Metanu has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World technology level

Metanu possesses a Technology Level of TL–3.
