Mars is an industrial, high-population desert hellworld, with a billion or more sophonts struggling to survive in a inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants.
  • This world has no free-standing water.
  • As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
  • This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or over technology standards for Charted Space.
  • This world toils under the control of a military government with conditions reflecting that situation including curtailed civil rights and limited freedoms.
  • This world has a research station engaged in the scientific pursuit of knowledge.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Sol Subsector of Solomani Rim Sector in the Domain of Sol.

System Data

The primary of the Terra system is Sol, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 1 Sol, a mass of 1 Sol, and a diameter of 1.391 million km. Sol retains a family of four inner rocky worlds, a stony planetoid belt, four outer gas giant worlds, and an outer ring of icy worldlets and debris:

  1. Mercury
  2. Venus
  3. Terra / Luna
  4. Mars
  5. Asteroid Belt
  6. Jupiter
  7. Saturn
  8. Uranus
  9. Neptune
  10. Pluto / Kuiper Belt
  • Mars is the outermost of the four inner rocky worlds.

There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Spaceports usually consist of a Downport.

World Technology Level

Mars possesses a Technology Level of TL–15 or TL-F in Hexadecimal Notation.

Historical Data

A large scientific and later industrial colony was established on Mars during Terra’s interplanetary period.

Around 400 the Old Earth Union revived the old terraforming program, which was then continued under successive Imperial and Solomani Confederation governments.

  • The Confederation undertook an aggressive program of economic revitalization and resettlement in parallel with terraforming.
  • The Confederation also established a major Naval Base on the moon of Deimos.

During the Solomani Rim War the invading Imperial fleet faced fierce resistance from the base on Deimos.

  • The Imperials deployed a squadron of battle tenders to tow planetoids as ‘nutcrackers’ to break Deimos open, destroying the moon.
  • The government on Mars surrendered quickly and the capital at Candor Chasma was occupied.

Mars has been under military rule ever since, with the Ministry of Colonization taking responsibility for the terraforming project until Terra achieves self rule.

  • An Imperial Marine garrison is stationed at a former Solomani Army base on the Elysium Plateau.
