Maplan is a poor, nonindustrial world.

  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • This world has few prospects for economic development.
  • It is a main world which is a satellite of either a gas giant or another world.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Sandazar Subsector of Course Sector.

System Data

Magus-Maplan System

The primary is Magus, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.284 Sols, a mass of 0.723 Sols, and a diameter of 1.073 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, and (II) a trace atmosphere worldlet. (III) Kardican, an exotic atmosphere hospitable world orbits within the habitable zone: (IIIb) Maplan is its outer satellite and is designated the mainworld. (IV) a very thin atmosphere hospitable world, (V) a large gas giant, (VI) a small gas giant, (VII-I) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (VII-II) a large gas giant, (VIII-I), an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (VIII-II) a small ice giant, and (IX) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

(III) Kardican

(III) Kardican (UWP Y7A2000-0) is categorised as a hospitable world. It orbits Magus at a mean distance of 0.69 AU (103.2 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 251 days 14 hours and a rotation period of 13.5 hours. The axial tilt is 18 degrees. Kardican has a diameter of 11,870 km, a density of 5.77 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.97 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Exotic, with a mean surface pressure of 6.38 bar and a composition of 83% nitrogen (N2), 16% carbon dioxide (CO2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon monoxide (CO), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Approximately 16% of the surface is covered in seas of carbon dioxide kept liquid by the very high atmospheric pressure: average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 63°C. The climate is rated as Very Hot and experiences minor seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is dynamic and powerful weather systems driven by the star and the seas sweep across the globe.

Satellites

Kardican retains two natural satellites, a heavily cratered ice-capped vacuum worldlet named Suzada and Maplan, designated the mainworld:

(IIIa) Suzada (UWP Y301000-0, orbiting at 7 Diameters/78,500 km)
(IIIb) Maplan (UWP C552578-6, orbiting at 40 Diameters/465,000 km)

Mainworld Data

(IIIb) Maplan

(IIIb) Maplan is the outer of the two major moons of (III) Kardican and is designated the mainworld. It orbits its parent world at a mean distance of 40 diameters (465,000 km), with an orbital period of 32 days 4 hours: it is tidally locked to Kardican. The axial tilt is 9 degrees relative to Kardican. Maplan has a diameter of 8,540 km, a density of 4.96 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.60 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Kardican cause regular geological activity. The atmosphere is rated as Thin, with a mean surface pressure of 0.67 bar and a composition of 76% nitrogen (N2), 23% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Around 18% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 7°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Cool and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is slow and moderate weather systems driven by the star and the seas work across the globe.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 229 million km², Land surface area: 188 million km², Water surface area: 41 million km². The surface is divided into arrid uplands (the Palatine Hills, the Lombard Plateau, and the Orsako Hills), desolate flatlands (the Plains of Forever and the Borean Levels), barren deserts (the Stonelands, the Expanse of Dunes, and the Finedust Wastes), and rugged mountains (the Starbach Range, the Heights of Arnax, and the Southern Peak Mountains). There are a number of depressions and hollows (the Great Central Crater, Rann's Trough, the Longlands, and the Trans-Equatorial Rift). Lowland regions contain the principal seas and lakes (the Long Sea, the Wassersee, the Splinter Lakes, and the Straights of Orrez) and the world's only major river, the long and winding Umbilia, deep in the southern hemiphere. Small permanent icecaps cover both the northern and southern poles.

Native Lifeforms

Magus-Maplan System

Maplan, the mainworld, has primitive native life, consisting almost entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in most ecological niches. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal. The most advanced species consist of microscopic multi-cellular flora-types, as well as a few specialised motile grazer forms. Colonies of organisms thrive in any region close to the water table, forming huge pools of photosynthetic slime.

  • A number of introduced species exist on the world, primarily plants grown for food production. There are also large numbers of livestock animals and riding beasts as well as a variety of accidentally introduced species, typically insect-parallels, vermin and escaped pets.

The cold marginally hospitable world lying in orbital position (IV) (within the H+ region of the outer system) has primitive cryophile native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that thrive in the harsh conditions. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

Maplan is a backwater world lying on the margins of the Distant Fringe.

World Starport

Maplan has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Technology level

Maplan possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.

World Government

Maplan has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

The world is divided into three competing power blocs and a large group of armed neutrals:

Maplan Workers' Union

A Civil Service Bureaucracy employing individuals selected for their expertise. The MWU governs a population of approximately 312,000 and controls the major urban areas on the world, including the starport. The primary interest of the MWU is manufacturing.

  • MWU trades with Asparta Estates for food and supplies
  • MWU trades with 3M for raw materials

Asparta Estates

An impersonal bureaucracy made up of agencies which are insulated from the governed. The total population is approximately 235,000, dwelling within habitat domes located in low-lying regions of the world where there is enough water to grow subsistence crops. The Estates primary concern is producing and processing agricultural products of all kinds, including foodstuffs and raw materials.

  • Asparta Estates trade for machinery and equipment with MWU
  • Asparta Estates trades with 3M for raw mineral products including premium soils, dressed stone and processed nutrient- and mineral-rich additives.

Murphy McGraff Mining

A corporate government, controlled by a company managerial elite with company employees as its citizens. The total population is approximately 190,000 employees stationed across the globe. 3M's primary concern is extracting and processing raw materials.

  • 3M trades with Asparta Estates for food and supplies
  • 3M trades with MWU for machinery and equipment

Outlanders

Disparate groups with tribal, clan and family bonds. The total population is approximately 185,000, living in tribal enclaves or forming nomadic groups that range widely across the outback and wilderness.

World Military

Each faction maintains their own unique small force for policing duties and as self protection, typically from bands of mounted Outlander raiders. Almost all serving personnel are mercenary or private security.

World Economy

  • Resources: 6 (Few)
  • Labor: 4 (Tens of thousands)
  • Infrastructure: 4 (Very limited)
  • Efficiency: +1 (Average)

Trade Data

The world's factions are interdependent upon each other for supplies, resources and equipment. This local commerce and trade is carried by heavily defended merchant caravans using rugged vehicles and following well-established overland routes. There is limited offworld trade, though occasional contracts can be brokered with factors and agents operating on behalf of a small number of shadowy corporate clients.

World Demographics

Population 922,000

Urbanization

Population centers are either established for specific functions, typically mining, industrial manufacturing or farming, or represent hidden enclaves of the dispossessed, who seek shelter from their enemies.

World Culture

  • Homogeneity: 8 (Discordant)
  • Acceptance: 3 (Xenophobic)
  • Strangeness: 1 (Very typical)
  • Symbols: 2 (Very concrete)
