Maplan is a poor, nonindustrial world.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- This world has few prospects for economic development.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Sandazar Subsector of Course Sector.
Astrography and Planetology
This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.

System Data
Magus-Maplan System
The primary is Magus, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.284 Sols, a mass of 0.723 Sols, and a diameter of 1.073 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, and (II) a trace atmosphere worldlet. (III) Kardican, an exotic atmosphere hospitable world orbits within the habitable zone: (IIIb) Maplan is its outer satellite. (IV) a very thin atmosphere hospitable world, (V) a large gas giant, (VI) a small gas giant, (VII) a sparse rocky planetoid belt, (VIII-I), a large gas giant, (VIII-II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, and (IX) a sparse icy planetoid belt. Most of the worlds retain satellites.
. The primary world, orbiting Magus at a mean distance of 0.69 AU, with an orbital period of 251 days 14 hours. Diameter 11,870 km, density 5.77 g/cm³, surface gravity 0.96 G. Atmosphere rated as exotic, surface pressure 5.35 bar, composition nitrogen 86%, carbon dioxide 12%, oxygen 1%, argon, neon and other trace gases 1%. Hydrographics: 16% of the surface is covered in seas and lakes of liquid carbon dioxide, primarily concentrated in the polar regions. Mean surface temperature 53°C.
(III) Kardican
(III) Kardican (UWP Y7A2000-0) is categorised as a hospitable world. It orbits Magus at a mean distance of 0.69 AU (103.2 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 251 days 14 hours and a rotation period of 13.5 hours. The axial tilt is 18 degrees. Kardican has a diameter of 11,870 km, a density of 5.77 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.97 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Exotic, with a mean surface pressure of 6.38 bar and a composition of 83% nitrogen, 16% carbon dioxide, and 1% argon, water vapour, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. Approximately 16% of the surface is covered in seas of carbon dioxide kept liquid by the very high atmospheric pressure : average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 63°C. The atmosphere is dynamic and powerful weather systems driven by the star and the seas sweep across the globe. The climate is seasonal.
Satellites
- (IIIa) Suzada (Y301000-0). The inner satellite of Kardican, orbiting the primary world at a mean distance of 7 diameters/78,500 km, with an orbital period of 2 days 14 hours. Diameter 4,810 km, density 3.81 g/cm³, surface gravity 0.26 G. Suzada is a heavily cratered vacuum world with approximately 8% of the surface covered in scattered pockets of water-ice, primarily of cometary origin.
- (IIIb) Maplan, designated the mainworld.
Mainworld Data
(IIIb) Maplan
(IIIb) Maplan is designated the mainworld. It is the outer satellite of Kardican, orbiting the primary world at a mean distance of 40 diameters/465,000 km, with an orbital period of 32 days 4 hours. The world has an axial tilt of 9 degrees and a rotational period of 24.5 hours. Diameter 8540 km, density 4.96 g/cm³, surface gravity 0.6 G. Atmosphere rated as Thin, surface pressure 0.67 bar, composition nitrogen 76%, oxygen 23%, argon, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases 1%. Hydrographics: 18% covered in seas and lakes of liquid water, largely concentrated in low-lying equatorial regions. Mean surface temperature 7°C. The climate is seasonal, with slow, predictable weather patterns punctuated by occasional violent storms.
Mainworld geography and topography
Total surface area: 229 million km², Land surface area: 188 million km², Water surface area: 41 million km².
Arrid uplands (Palatine Hills, Lombard Plateau, Orsako Hills)
Desolate flatlands (Plains of Forever, Borean Levels)
Barren deserts (Stonelands, Expanse of Dunes, Finedust Wastes)
Rugged mountains (Scarback Range, Heights of Arnax, Southern Peak Mountains)
Depressions and hollows (Great Central Crater, Rann's Trough, Longlands, Trans-Equatorial Rift)
- Water table, with relatively dense concentrations of native lifeforms (Umbilia River)
- Seas and lakes (Long Sea, Wassersee, Splinter Lakes, Straights of Orrez)
Small permanent polar icecaps
Native lifeforms
Maplan has native live, though no organism has evolved beyond the microscopic multi-cellular stage. Flora-types form the overwhelming majority of local species, with their internal processes serving to renew the atmosphere, though some types have specialised into motile grazers. A number of introduced species exist on the world, primarily plants grown for food production. There are also large numbers of livestock animals and riding beasts as well as a variety of accidentally introduced species, typically vermin and escaped pets.
History & Background (Dossier)
No information yet available.
World starport
Maplan has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World technology level
Maplan possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone, radio, and television.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fission power generation, advanced water and wind generation of electricity.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, early ATV's, and dedicated AFV's.
- Water: Amphibious vehicles, improved submersibles, and early SCUBA gear.
- Air: Early jet aircraft and rotorcraft VTOL's.
- Space: Early unmanned rocket delivery systems and early manned orbital rockets.
World government
Maplan has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.
The world is divided into three competing power blocs and a large group of armed neutrals:
Maplan Workers Union
A Civil Service Bureaucracy employing individuals selected for their expertise. The total population is approximately 312,000, controlling the major urban areas on the world. The central hub is adjacent to the starport. There are three other large towns, connected to the capital by high speed rail systems. The primary interest of the MWU is manufacturing.
- MWU trades with Asparta Estates for food and supplies
- MWU trades with 3M for raw materials
Asparta Estates
An impersonal bureaucracy made up of agencies which are insulated from the governed. The total population is approximately 235,000, dwelling within habitat domes located in low-lying regions of the world where there is enough water to grow subsistence crops. The Estates primary concern is producing and processing agricultural products of all kinds, including foodstuffs and raw materials.
- Asparta Estates trade for machinery and equipment with MWU
Murphy McGraff Mining
A corporate government, controlled by a company managerial elite with company employees as its citizens. The total population is approximately 190,000 employees stationed across the globe. 3M's primary concern is extracting and processing raw materials.
- 3M trades with Asparta Estates for food and supplies
- 3M trades with MWA for machinery and equipment
Outlanders
Disparate groups with tribal, clan and family bonds. The total population is approximately 185,000, living in tribal enclaves or forming nomadic groups that range widely across the outback and wilderness.
