The Mal'Gnar are a technologically sophisticated sophont species.

Description (Specifications)

The Mal'Gnar (pronounced "mal-nyar") are descendants of early Terran Homo pekinensis (a subspecies of Homo erectus) transported to the Mal'Gnar Radiant by the Ancients according to legend.

Physiology & Environment

The Mal'Gnar were the subjects of a lengthy experiment in genetoevolutionary engineering, the results of which were the development of long, supple, feathered wings and retractable-taloned feet. This manipulation no doubt accounts for the intense desire exhibited by the Mal'Gnar to remain aloof from the rest of Humaniti and their equally intense dislike of the Droyne. Outsiders typically perceive their disposition to be humorless and seeming to show little animation. They consider themselves to be coldly logical. They are not violent with each other; however, they consider no other species as properly sentient, no matter what "tricks" it can do.

Like the Zhodani, the Mal'Gnar are a race of Humaniti, inter-fertile with the rest of Humaniti. Mal' Gnar adults average 2.8 meters and 68 kg. In most respects they are human/humanoid.

History & Background (Dossier)

While their body mass is similar to that of thin humans, they are incapable of lifting their own body weight from the planetary surface of their homeworld by their wings alone. Once airborne, however, the Mal'Gnar are masters of gliding and soaring, which some say is one of the few passions in their life. The only art form truly unique to the Mal'Gnar is their aerial ballet. Anyone who has witnessed one has called it stunning with its grace and beauty. However, few outsiders have seen them and it is strong tradition that these works are never recorded. A holo of one of these ballets can get large sums of money outside Mal'Gnar space. It can mean automatic death within.

The other "passion" among the Mal'Gnar is history. All aspects of their lives are ruled by the principles of "Precedent" and "Tradition". This makes the Mal'Gnar not very progressive, and slow to adapt to new situations. Although the Mal'Gnar are considered grim by most races, they also cooperate well with each other. They function with minimal jealousy or ego.

Technology, by its nature brings change. Therefore the Mal'Gnar are very careful with research. All potential effects of a new technology are considered before it is introduced. If the technology's effect is too radical, the discovery is put on the shelf.

Social Organization

The Mal'Gnar social structure centers around the concept of an Echelon Quintad: five individuals who function together as a single, multipurpose, unit. Each of the five members of an Echelon Quintad is drawn from one or more of the six echelons which divide the Mal'Gnar society: Advisers, Hunters, Leaders, Multi-Echeloned Ones, Priests and Technicians. Only two of these echelons are sexually restrictive: Priests are always male, while the Advisers are always female. Each Quintad must contain one and only one Adviser from which the Quintad takes its name.
