The Mahkahraik of Ma (Ley 3021) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a Semi-humanoid appearance and technologically developing sophonts.
Description (Specifications)
The Mahkahraik, which means "People of This World" in their native tongue, are a species of warm-blooded, bipedal reptiloids native to Ma (Ley 3021 B865134-6).
History & Background (Dossier)
Before the arrival of human colonists during the Long Night, these sophonts existed in small tribes, where they pursued simple lives as nomadic hunter/gatherers. The Mahkahraik had already discovered fire and primitive tools in their efforts to master their environment, achieving the hallmark signs of TL–0 development. Initial contact with the human colonists, however, changed that.
After first contact had been made, the more technologically advanced colonists subjugated the nearby tribes, and used them as soldiers to protect the colonies from the “uncivilized” Mahkahraik. Eventually, the natives found themselves either pushed out of the western end of the supercontinent that was their homeland, or subjugated by the human intruders that conquered the western lands. The reptiloids learned much from their colonial overlords, and soon technology spread across the continent, out from the civilized region and into the interior. Rebellions among the tribes were put down with superior technology and training among the overlords and their sepoy troops, but the colony was in decline. The colonists’ tech level gradually dropped to around 7.
Culture & Society
Culturally, the Mahkahraik still honor the deeply rooted customs of their old tribal ways, modified by the integration of Terran and Sydite customs passed down by their overlords. As a people, the Mahkahraik honor the passage of the seasons and an awareness of the local ecology and environment. Being a superstitious people, the Mahkahraik have a rich oral history filled with myths and legends associated with totem spirits they believe dwell in the natural world around them. Although they are descended from predators, the People of the World seek to live in harmony with the world about them. As predators, the Mahkahraik naturally hold sway over the world about them, but believe that it is important not to overhunt or waste the resources that are available to them. As a result, most Mahkahraik are intolerant of sloth, greed and other human frailties that harm the world or one’s role in the cycle of life.
As individuals, Mahkahraik are honorable warriors, sustained spiritually by their connection with the world around them. In general, the Mahkahraik find interstellar space to be disheartening, because of the lack of totem spirits. The People can be devout and loyal to those who respect their relationship with the totem spirits and recognize the Mahkahraik as the predators that they are.
