Luyten's Star (otherwise known as L5-1668 or BD+05 1668) is a pinkish-orange "red dwarf" main sequence star of spectral type M3.5.

Description (Specifications)

Because of its low mass, the interior of Luyten's Star is completely convective, causing energy to be transferred to the exterior by the movement of plasma rather than through radiative transport. This convection means that the helium ash left over from the thermonuclear fusion of hydrogen does not accumulate at the core, but instead circulates throughout the star. Unlike Sol, which will only burn through about 10% of its total hydrogen supply before leaving the main sequence, Luyten's Star will consume nearly all of its fuel before the fusion of hydrogen comes to an end, becoming smaller and hotter as the fuel is used up and turning into a "blue dwarf" as its end approaches. It will finally end its life as a white dwarf, without having passed through the red-giant phase.

  • The habitable zone of Luyten's Star lies at ~ 0.15AU, with an inner edge of ~0.102AU and an outer edge of ~0.198AU.
  • At this distance, a planet's orbital period would be competed in ~42 days.

The Luyten's Star star system is approximately 3.8pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimward/Rimtriling direction from Terra at bearing 212.3o Galactic Longitude and +10.4o North Galactic Latitude.

History & Background (Dossier)

(Non-canonical): Luyten's Star lies in the same hexgrid as the star Procyon, the primary star of the world Fenris/Sol (Solomani Rim 1830).
