The Lurent of Borlund (Deneb 1406) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a Non-humanoid appearance, and are technologically advanced sophonts.

Despite their minor status, their trade ships are sufficiently widespread that they have became a power of sorts in the politics of the Deneb Sector.

Biology[edit]

The Lurent are large, typically taking up as much space as six humans. Their bulky, headless bodies are covered in a soft fur, ranging in color from pale green to dark blue. Their two flexible legs are capable of raising their bodies up two meters and their two tentacles are another two meters long. The vestigial tail is often mistaken for an ear flap. Their mouths are lined with sharp teeth but they lack vocal cords.

Much of the body's interior is filled by air sacs and their 'skeleton' is a mesh of hollow bones. As such, Lurent typically have the mass of an average Human, despite their larger size.

Senses[edit]

Lurent vision is shifted towards the infrared. They are able to see near IR, red and green colours but are blind to blue. They have a better sense of smell than Humans.

Lurent have the ability to sense electrical fields and the ability to "sense life" at a distance of about 50 metres (similar to Threep).

Sex and Reproduction[edit]

Lurent have three sexes. The third is a scouting gender, the other two corresponding to male and female. The female gives birth to litters which are nourished in a pouch for two years. Young Lurent are light and the mother is not overly hindered by carrying them.

Male Lurent are sensitive to electrical fields. Females have an innate mathematical talent.

Evolution[edit]

This species originated on Borlund (world) and developed intelligence.

Sophonce[edit]

This species developed intelligence in response to climactic change.

Borlund's low gravity combined with the efficient use of vertical space on its cliffside ecosystems allowed the population to grow with few major interruptions by war or disease. It reached the billions before space travel was developed. The colonisation of their home system saw the Lurent population boom into the tens of billions as gigantic planetoids were gathered and moved into the habitable zone to drive industry, agriculture and engineering. Concentrated raiding by Vargr corsairs later spurred development of defensive technology; in time Vargr learned to avoid the Borlund System.

Climate[edit]

This species holds the following environmental preferences:

  • Terrestrial planet
  • Temperate climate
  • Plains and grasslands ecotopes (Borlund's equivalent is more vertical than horizontal)
  • Low-standard gravity
  • Standard atmosphere

Anatomy & Physiology[edit]

Sophontologists studying this species have discovered the following data.

Bauplan[edit]

Mammalianoid

  • Semi-humanoid
  • Bilateral symmetry (2-ial)
  • Kind of -pod (4-ped)
    • 2 limbs used for manipulation "tentacles"
    • 2 limbs used for locomotion "legs"
    • 1 vestigal tail
  • Body consists of two segments (no head):
    • Thorax with sensory apparati
    • Abdomen

Respiration[edit]

This species used a conventional respiration cycle consisting of:

  • Oxygen-nitrogen inhalant
  • Carbon dioxide exhalant

Diet[edit]

This species survives using the following methods of consumption:

  • Omnivore/gatherer
  • This species favors a variety of foodstuffs.

History[edit]

Social Organization: 1105: Lurent are divided into tribes and clans. Each tribe has a migratory period where it travels abroad and a sedentary period where it returns to its homeland.

Language[edit]

Their speech is composed of whistled tones and patterns that can be heard over long distances. However, a mix of tentacle gesture and body language is more important to conversation. Lurent language is subtle, with complex nuances of gesture that Humans can't replicate. Lurent can hear perfectly well but sometimes forget to listen to words instead of following gestures. This can lead to embarrassing misunderstandings.

Research[edit]

Lurent have a vague claustrophobia when it comes to starships, and use large planetoids equipped with engines for in-system and interstellar travel. Their fleet of at least 250 wandering planetoid starships are scattered across Deneb Sector at any one time. Lurent ships can be of up to 3 kilometres or so in diameter, or at least a billion dTons, making them one of the Imperium's Megastructures to be wondered at.

Astrography[edit]

This race is primarily located in the following areas:

Some older Lurent planetoid ships have no jump drives and are still in the middle of a long sublight transit. These ships are vibrant, living communities, receiving new personnel and supplies at planned rendezvous points and operating a number of jump-capable craft. More than one Lurent ship acts as a Jump Bridge for years at it crosses the gap between mains.

Homeworld[edit]

The homeworld of this race is:
