Lias is a high-population, industrial world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.
- As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
- Its economy is rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to rapidly improve barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Rimward Federation in the Demon's Eye Subsector of Far Home Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.
Astrography and Planetology
This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.
- The Lias system is a part of the Pel Avena Cluster.
- The supergiant primary star of the Demon's Eye system and the huge Demon's Eye Nebula that surrounds it, lying around 8 parsecs to coreward-trailing, are clearly visible in the sky.

System Data
Shale-Lias System
The primary is Shale, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 1.102 Sols, a mass of 1.02 Sols, and a diameter of 1.399 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, and (III) a very thin atmosphere hospitable world. (IV) Lias orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (V) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, and (VI) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.
Agate Subsystem
The companion is Agate, a red subdwarf star that orbits Shale at a mean distance of 589 AU (orbital position (XIV), 88.1 million km) and has an orbital period of 14,153 years. It has a luminosity of 0.0056 Sols, a mass of 0.124 Sols, and a diameter of 189,000 km. (I) a very thin atmosphere radworld, and (II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld form the outer system. The bigworld retains satellites.
- The star experiences periodic flare activity.
Mainworld Data
(IV) Lias
(IV) Lias is designated the mainworld. It orbits Shale at a mean distance of 0.97 AU (145.1 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 345 days 12 hours and a rotation period of 33 hours. The axial tilt is 24 degrees. Lias has a diameter of 12,994 km, a density of 5.89 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 1.09 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 1.08 bar and a composition of 71% nitrogen (N2), 27% oxygen (O2), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), ozone (O3), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the high percentage of atmospheric oxygen. Approximately 68% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.3m. Mean surface temperature: 22°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Warm and experiences moderate seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is active and strong weather systems driven by the star and the oceans drive across the globe.
Satellite
Lias retains a single natural satellite, a cratered vacuum worldlet named Jade:
- (IVa) Jade (UWP Y200000-0, orbiting at 30 Diameters/390,000 km)
Mainworld Geography and Topography
Total surface area: 530 million km², Water surface area: 360 million km², Land surface area: 170 million km².
Native Lifeforms
Shale-Lias System
The hot marginally hospitable world lying in orbital position (III) (within the H– region of the inner system) has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of shelter and moisture. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.
Lias, the mainworld, has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
The warm exotic atmosphere bigworld lying in orbital position (V) (within the H+ region of the outer system) has extensive, abundant native life, with complex, bizarre organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
No other world in the system is known to have native life.
Agate Subsystem
No world in the subsystem is known to have native life.

World starport
Lias has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World technology level
Lias possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
- Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
- Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
