Lias is a high-population, industrial world with a billion or more sophonts in population size.

  • As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
  • Its economy is rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to rapidly improve barring outside forces.
  • It is a member of the Rimward Federation in the Demon's Eye Subsector of Far Home Sector, which is part of the Distant Fringe.

Astrography and Planetology

This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.

System Data

Shale-Lias System

The primary is Shale, an ordinary yellow main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 1.102 Sols, a mass of 1.02 Sols, and a diameter of 1.399 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet, (II) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, and (III) a very thin atmosphere hospitable world. (IV) Lias orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (V) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, and (VI) a sparse icy planetoid belt form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Agate Subsystem

The companion is Agate, a red subdwarf star that orbits Shale at a mean distance of 589 AU (orbital position (XIV), 88.1 million km) and has an orbital period of 14,153 years. It has a luminosity of 0.0056 Sols, a mass of 0.124 Sols, and a diameter of 189,000 km. (I) a very thin atmosphere radworld, and (II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld form the outer system. The bigworld retains satellites.

Mainworld Data

(IV) Lias

(IV) Lias is designated the mainworld. It orbits Shale at a mean distance of 0.97 AU (145.1 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 345 days 12 hours and a rotation period of 33 hours. The axial tilt is 24 degrees. Lias has a diameter of 12,994 km, a density of 5.89 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 1.09 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 1.08 bar and a composition of 71% nitrogen (N2), 28% oxygen (O2), 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), neon (Ne) and and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the high percentage of atmospheric oxygen. Approximately 68% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.3m. Mean surface temperature: 22°C. The atmosphere is active and strong weather systems driven by the star and the oceans drive across the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 530 million km², Water surface area: 360 million km², Land surface area: 170 million km².

Native Lifeforms

Lias has extensive, abundant native life, with complex organisms inhabiting every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

History & Background (Dossier)

No information yet available.

World starport

Lias has a good quality starport.

  • A Class-B Starport Facility has not very well developed shipyards and is only capable of producing spaceships.
  • This facility has many very skilled personnel who can perform not only major repair work, but overhaul work as well.
  • This facility has advanced refueling and refining infrastructure. One may purchase practically any kind of refined fuel here.
  • Almost every starport of this class possesses both a Lowport and a Highport. Such ports rarely have more than one of each kind of port.

World technology level

Lias possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
    • Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gears.
    • Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
    • Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft, and interstellar STL starships
    • FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.

World government

Lias has a Balkanized government.

  • No central ruling authority exists. Rival governments compete for control.
  • The typical power source of this government is a Balkanization.
  • The typical power structure of this government is a Confederation (Anarchy).

World military

See the Rimward Federation entry.

World economy

Trade data

  • Primary Commodities: machinery, ground vehicles, flying craft, manufactured goods.
  • Secondary Commodities: fossil fuels, mineral ores, bioproducts (principally lumber).
  • Demand: foodstuffs, fabrics, high tech equipment, luxuries.

World Demographics

Population 4,216,000,000

World Culture

  • Homogeneity: 5 (Harmonious, general political agreement)
