Description (Specifications)

The armored cruiser is a historical design produced in the Terran Confederation during the early 22nd century. These ships fled the Destruction of Terra at the hands of the Vilani Imperium in 2147AD, forming the fighting core of the Last Armada and carrying with them the last remnants of Terran culture and independence. The were extremely sturdy and reliable and endured more than a century of spaceflight. They ultimately found and settled the Demon Cluster, the Distant Fringe.

The hull is fully streamlined, giving good atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by its onboard gravitic systems. There are multiple airlocks located around the vessel. The cargo hold is accessed by large doors and has a loading ramp. The vessel has sturdy retractable legs, allowing surface landings.

All quarters are double occupancy. There are 150 Low Berths. These hold the Frozen Watch who share and rotate crew duties over the long voyage. The low berths are tended by the vessel's medical staff. It carries 800 GenPods and large embryo banks. Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems. There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off. There are multiple emergency lockers.
3.	Performance	The vessel mounts a Jump-2 drive, a Maneuver-2 drive, and a Power Plant-4, giving performance of Jump-2 and 2-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 1 and an emergency agility of 2. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for two consecutive Jump-2s and gives the power plant 4 weeks duration. The engineering section has a main control room. Ladders, gantries and platforms give access to the machinery. The jump drive utilizes a lanthanum hull grid. The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.

Hull

The Armored Cruiser is constructed using a 38,000 dTon hull built in a Wedge configuration: The hull is plated and structurally reinforced, with an armor rating of 4. The vessel is fully streamlined to allow gas giant refuelling: it is equipped with fuel scoops.

• Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency.
• The hull includes internal grav plates and inertial compensators. All accessible sections of the hull have life support.

Engineering

The vessel mounts a DeVoss-type jump-2 drive, a maneuver-2 drive, and a power plant 4, giving performance of jump-2 and 2G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 1. There is fuel tankage of 16,720 dTons, sufficient for two jump-2s and giving the power plant four weeks duration. The vessel is fitted with a purification plant.

Supplemental Fuel Tankage

There are 176 staterooms and 152 low berths. 800 GenPods are carried in armored, shielded and sealed compartments to ensure the survival of the human species. Double occupancy accommodations are required for all except the command crew. Cargo capacity amounts to 22 dTons.

Crew

The Armored Cruiser requires 304 crew: 13 command, 76x engineering, 98x gunnery, 76x service, 38 service crew, 2 medical and 1 flight crew.

• There is a complete frozen watch to share and rotate the duties over the long voyage. These crew remain within the low berths until reawakened for duty.

Weapons

The ship has 380 hardpoints. These are grouped into:

• one spinal particle accelerator
• two 50 dTon repulsor bays
• ten plasma gun batteries, each consisting of a single-mount turret
• thirty missile batteries, each consisting of 10 linked triple turrets
• one sandcaster battery, consisting of 10 linked triple turrets
• one beam laser battery, consisting of 5 linked triple turrets

The laser batteries are primarily used to shoot down approaching rocks and space debris. The plasma gun turrets provide point defense. Missile turrets can be used to launch recon probes.

Subcraft

The ship carries one 60 dTon Survey Shuttle in a dedicated hanger.

Cost

The basic cost of the vessel, complete with its subcraft, is MCr31,326.932

• Detailed architectural plans must be drawn up: an architect's fee of MCr313.269 is chargeable.
• If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price per unit to MCr25,061.546.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Last Armada class Armored Cruiser is a class of warships designed and built for the Expedition. This class of vessel is historical – no extant examples are known to exist. It was constructed under the aegis of the Expedition to escort the vessels of the Last Armada on their perilous voyage into the unknown. Because of the demands for greater range, requiring additional onboard fuel, the design were armored similarly to strike cruisers of the era rather than traditional heavy cruisers. The 2G acceleration and low agility were also necessary trade-offs.

The over-engineered, extra-thick hull plating added greater structural strength to the design, allowing it to survive the extremely long voyage through unexplored space. The hull armor primarily served as shielding for the precious cargo of life rather than to protect the ship from serious battle damage. The armored hull helped to limit long-term radiation exposure, shielding embryos from lethal dosages delivered by high speed, short wavelength particles.

Known Examples

• Destiny Bastion, the vessel on which Lieutenant Alisa Zelig, the author of the Zelig Journal, served. The vessel made it to Year One.
• Hope Triumphant, a Dissident Fleet vessel commanded by Keslo Rann, the founder of the mythical Rann's Worlds in Lucent Sector.
• Resolve Aspirant, a Last Armada vessel recorded as "lost" in the Zelig Journal. Its supporting tanker, the Versatility Grace, disappeared at the same time.
