Lair is a high-population garden world with a billion or more sophonts in population size and a near-ideal utopian environment conducive to most sophonts.
- Its economy and population are rapidly growing and living conditions are expected to quickly rise barring outside forces.
- It is a member of the Lair Protectorate in the Grnouf Subsector of Provence Sector.
- This is a temperate world, with a climate of pleasant, average temperatures, considered to be an ideal or near-ideal environment by many different sophont species.
- This is a "high technology" world with technology achievements at, near, or over technology standards for Charted Space.
- This is a "Puzzle" world designated as an Amber Zone. Caution is advised since the world has an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions that are not well understood and might be a danger to a visitor.
- It is the homeworld of the Vargr.
- This world is also the overall capital of an interstellar government with the massive extra trade and prestige associated with that role.
- This world-system hosts a Naval Base, usually associated with military starships, which may be located on or off-world.
- Unusually enough for the capital of a star-spanning empire, several sections of the planet still boasted independence from central control only a few years ago.
- From Imperial convention, this world is named Lair. Vargr scholars do not agree on a single name for the planet, which has been renamed several times in the course of millenia.
- It is the chief world of the Lair Protectorate and has huge significance within the Vargr Extents.
- It is also commonly known as Lloelldegh. Less commonly, it may be called Kneng, the name of its star.
Description (Astrography & Planetology)[edit]
Lair has a solitary primary star named Kneng.
- It is a yellow main sequence.
Monostellar System[edit]

System Data[edit]
The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:
- The mainworld, orbiting within the habitable zone.
- x7 secondary rocky worlds, three orbiting within the inner system, one orbiting within the outer system, and three lying within the far outer system.
- x1 planetoid belt, lying within the outer system.
- x3 gas giants, one orbiting at the very outer edge of the habitable zone and two orbiting within the outer system.
See the Lair system for additional details.
Mainworld Data[edit]
Lair occupies the fourth orbital position within the star system, with a mean orbital distance of 0.7 AU. It has an orbital period of about 220.6 standard days or 5295.2 standard hours.
- This world has a rotational period of 25 hours, 58 minutes and 3 seconds, yielding a local day of about 26 standard hours in length. There are 203.6 local 26-hour days in the local year.
- This world's axis is tilted to the plane of its orbit by approximately 23.5o, giving it distinct seasons, each lasting around 51 local days.
Mainworld Size (S)[edit]
- This world has a diameter of about 12,842 km, a mass of 0.98 M⊕, and a surface gravity of 0.98g.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)[edit]
Lair has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. A Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear although it may be hard on sophonts not accustomed to it.
- The mean surface atmospheric pressure is about 1.8 atm.
Lair is a temperate world. Average temperatures range from a warm 37° at the equator to a chilling -38° at the poles.
- Between those two extremes are a northern temperate belt and a southern temperate belt that experience pleasant climatic conditions, only rarely troubled by the fierce storms of the other latitudes.
Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)[edit]
This world's hydrosphere, small in comparison to Terra's or Vland's, lessens both the chance and severity of rain.
- Hydrosphere - 51%
- Oceans, Inlets, Lakes and Rivers - Liquid Water
- Number of Major Continents - 5
- Number of Minor Continents - 0
- Number of Small Islands - 7
- Number of Archipelagoes - 5
- Hydrosphere Terraforming - none
- Weather Control - yes
Mainworld Geography & Topography[edit]
- Lair boasts 5 continents, and 10% of its surface is covered by polar ice caps.
- The largest continent is named Safokunggaru, and is quite mountainous and straddles the equator. The Onggungira range casts its shadows on the cities of the southeastern coastlands, and includes some of Lair's few active volcanoes. At the far end of the continent lies the city of Aforrarrang, the capital of Lair.
- Onfakh Gurz and Onfakh Dzae were once a single desert continent that has since broken apart through tectonic activity. Today the Ungodhi Desert of Onfakh Gurz is the largest desert on the planet, larger even than the Eggaekh Desert on Onfakh Dzae. The two large commercial centers of Idogoukh and Feksoudhi lie in the foothills of the continent's mountains.
- Aerueko Fen extends northward from the planetary equator, and has terrain that spans jungle in the south to tundra in the north. Aerueko Fen is the most heavily populated continent; its Arrak Plains north of the Dzuengfuerr Jungle were the original home of the Vargr race. An inlet of the Gekersguekel Bay hosts the manufacturing center and former capital city of Gaenfouzoudo.
- The rocky southern polar continent of Gaksadudha is covered with snow and ice, and boasts the Fothironggen mountain range.
Native Lifeforms[edit]
Among the most well-known of Lair's native lifeforms are the Nolrrgarrai and the Sokhkhun, two species of carnivore that share a symbiotic relationship in the wild.
The Ksarrg, a large tusked predatory food animal, is also indigenous to Lair.
Native Sophont[edit]
Lair is the homeworld of the Vargr.
- Please see Vargr for more information.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Lair is a Anglic designation for the Vargr homeworld. It in fact has many different names among the various Vargr dialects. One reasonably well-known and somewhat widespread native name for Lair is Lloelldegh, a term meaning "homeworld" in several archaic Vargr dialects. Unlike the homeworlds of other races, Lair has never been accorded much status in the hearts and minds of the Vargr.
It is a Puzzle World and is designated as an Amber Zone. It presents particular risks and dangers due to the environment or native life forms, laws or customs, or other conditions that are not well understood.
- Visitors are advised to act with caution.
World Starport (Sp)[edit]
Lair has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.
World Population (P)[edit]
Lair has a population of 2,000,000,000 sophonts (billions).
- High Population Worlds like this tend to have huge consumer markets.
- The population primarily consists of Vargr.
- Revised estimates place the population closer to 2.6 billion.
Urbanization[edit]
Sprawling megaplexes have replaced much forestry and fields though reserves have been set aside for farming and livestock.
World Languages[edit]
Logaksu is the official language, though many dialects - some so distinct to almost be separate languages in their own right - can be heard.
Other languages that may be heard include:
World Technology Level (TL)[edit]
Lair possesses a Technology Level of TL–15 or TL-F in Hexadecimal Notation.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Meson Communicators and Pseudo Reality Communications.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Miniature super-batteries, improved collectors, and advanced Fusion+.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land & Water: Advanced gravcraft.
- Air: Advanced gravcraft and speeders.
- Space: Advanced gravcraft and G-Carriers.
- FTL: Jump Drive-6.
World Government (G)[edit]
Lair is governed by a Non-charismatic Dictatorship. A continuation of the charismatic dictatorship, where the original leadership has died or retired and replaced by allies or protégés. The reasons for the change in government remain as well as the assertion of rights to rule.
As of 1116, the current Non-Charismatic Dictator ruler of Lair is a male Vargr named Ulurz Otsunga, who resides in a palace in the capital city of Aforrarrang.
World Law (L)[edit]
Lair has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).
- Criminal Law B
- Civil Law 8
- Personal Freedom 7
Trade Data[edit]
- Importance: 3 (ordinary)
Lair produces 7200 Resources Units (RU or aryu), above average for Pre-Rich worlds of its High Population.
World Economy[edit]
- Resources: F (extremely abundant)
- Labor: 8 (hundreds of millions)
- Infrastructure: F (very comprehensive)
- Efficiency: +4 (advanced)
World Culture[edit]
- Heterogenity: A (discordant)
- Acceptance: C (xenophilic)
- Strangeness: 6 (very distinct)
- Symbols: F (extremely abstract)
Local Customs[edit]
- Extravagant quarters for government officials - Functionaries and political figures are culturally expected to reside and build upon their large residences.
- Remarriage required on Gaksadudha continent - The planetary government wishes to maintain population figures on the frigid, southern continent by requiring remarriage for those living there.
- Close meetings of academic figures are taboo - Outsiders are banned from attending the Council of Sociologists meetings as Ulurs Otsunga insinuates sweeping reforms with the elite and secretive learned.
World Timeline[edit]
Major events that have affected this world and the wider region that it lies within:
- ca -250,000: The Ancients were active within the sector, transplanting the Vargr onto Lair.
- -9235: the Vilani discover jump technology. A few explorers and settlers begin to pioneer the region.

- -3810: the Vargr discover jump technology and begin an era of expansion.
- -2400s: Vargr raiding into human-dominated areas significantly increases. This becomes known as the Vargr Pillaging.
- ca -2350: the Foergaz Coalition, an early polity, collapses.
- ca -1700: Vargr rimward expansion gradually ceases: the border between human and Vargr space stabilizes.
- -1776 to 0: the Long Night. There is widespread regression within the area and some worlds become barren.
- The Year 0: to rimward-trailing, the Third Imperium is founded.
- circa 26: the Empire of Varroerth is founded.
- 300-420: the Imperial First Survey charts the system.
- 777: the Lair Protectorate is established.
- 995-1065: the Imperial Second Survey charts the system.
- 1065: the Second Survey is published. Information about the system becomes widely available.
- 1095: Faarzgaen extremists capture a number of worlds and secede from the Empire of Varroerth. They declare a Jihad against neighbouring worlds.
- 1096: the Province of Llaeghskath secedes from the Empire of Varroerth, becoming the Llaeghskath Interacterate.
