System Data

Marlen-Fess-Kuyt System

The primary is Marlen, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0202 Sols, a mass of 0.3942 Sols, and a diameter of 604,000 km. The companion is Fess, a dim red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.0055 Sols, a mass of 0.302 Sols, and a diameter of 444,000 km. The two stars have a mean separation of 0.03 AU (4.45 million km) and an orbital period around one another of 2 days 6 hours. (I-I) Kuyt, designated the mainworld, and (I-II) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world, have a shared orbit within the habitable zone. (II) an exotic atmosphere stormworld, (II) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (III) a trace atmosphere worldlet, (IV) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, (V) a very thin atmosphere radworld, and (VI) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(I-I) Kuyt

(I-I) Kuyt is designated the mainworld. It orbits Marlen and Fess at a mean distance of 0.13 AU (19.5 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 20 days 13 hours: it is tidally locked to Marlen and Fess. The axial tilt is 0 degrees. Kuyt has a diameter of 4,438 km, a density of 3.43 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.22 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of the two stars cause frequent geological activity. Its atmosphere is rated as Trace, with a mean surface pressure of 0.08 bar and a composition of 89% carbon dioxide (CO2), 7% nitrogen (N2), 2% methane (CH4), 1% argon (Ar), and 1% carbon monoxide (CO), water vapor (H2O), abiotic oxygen (O2), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The world experiences relatively high levels of background radiation: emission rates exceed 5 rads per hour. Approximately 18% of the surface is covered in sheets of water-ice. Mean surface temperature: 34°C. The climate is rated as Hot and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is almost static and very weak weather systems driven by the star ghost across the globe.

Mainworld Size (S)

This world is a Small World between 4,000km and 5,600km in diameter. The world has low gravity between 0.24G and 0.34G. The horizon will appear about 3km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

This world has a pressure of less than 0.1 atmospheres which requires the use of a Vacc Suit. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

This world has 15-25% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. There may be a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 62 million km², Land surface area: 51 million km², Ice surface area: 11 million km².

  • Kuyt is a Twilight Zone World.
  • The world experiences libration, which causes the star to move in the sky and periodically rise and fall above the horizon in the twilight region. All of the ice is concentrated on the dark face of the world.

Native Lifeforms

No world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

World starport

Kuyt has a Class A Starport, an excellent quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and other kinds of repair, and construction of both starships and non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

  • Peace footing (government modifier x1.1). Port Capacity: 990 dTons

Facilities

Port facilities within the system include:

World technology level

Kuyt possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.

World government

Kuyt is governed by a Civil Service Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government is another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy leadership influences policy. The government leadership may select the bureaucracy leadership, but not its membership. Usually the governmental leadership is divided, or incapable of setting policy and the bureaucracy provides a stabilizing influence. The bureaucracy may be the full government bureaucracy or a section with limited jurisdiction but considerable influence like the military.

World military

The Kuyt Bureau For Protective Affairs is responsible for maintaining the system's defenses.

World economy

No information yet available.

Trade data

A number of important companies have their headquarters at Kuyt:

World Demographics

Population 900,000,000

Urbanization

There are nine major settlements. Much of the construction is underground in tunnels to protect from the elements. Water is recovered from the small polar ice caps. The settlements are connected by high speed grav rail train lines. A complex system of bureaus and agencies are responsible for managing governmental and civil affairs.

World culture

Different groups and segments of social strata have highly distinctive markings and decorations on their vacuum suits for use when outside life support areas. They can often be distinguished from a distance, as to their function, job and/or point of origin by locals familiar with the pattern of markings. There are deep seated taboos about wearing suits of another group, or wearing sterile, unmarked suits. They feel more comfortable in suits marked appropriately. Changing status or group is accompanied by getting a new suit "ceremony", it is highly unusual that old suits would be retagged. Polar ice miners would be obvious when compared to starport or shipyard employees to a local, but a visitor wouldn't necessarily notice any difference.
