Kell is a low-population hellworld with a population less than 10,000 sophonts struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment .
- Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Liradi Subsector of Gulf Sector.
Astrography and Planetology
This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.
- This world forms part of the Liradi Trace.

System Data
Volen-Kell System
The system primary is Volen, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.61 Sols, a mass of 0.773 Sols and a diameter of 1.167 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a vacuum worldlet – orbital position (II) is empty. (III) Kell orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IV) a small gas giant, (V) a vacuum iceworld, and (VI) an exotic atmosphere bigworld form the outer system. All of the outer worlds retain satellites.
Mainworld Data
(III) Kell
(III) Kell is designated the mainworld. It orbits Volen at a mean distance of 0.65 AU (97.2 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 217 days 15 hours and a rotation period 12 days 9 hours. The axial tilt is 7 degrees. Kell has a diameter of 10,381 km, a density of 5.12 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.76 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Exotic, with a mean surface pressure of 16.5 bar and a composition of 95% nitrogen (N2), 3% carbon dioxide (CO2), 1% methane (CH4), and 1% argon (Ar), carbon monoxide (CO), abiotic oxygen (O2), water vapor (H2O), ethane (C2H6), acetylene (C2H2), diacetylene (C4H2), propane (C3H8) and other trace gases. Mean surface temperature: 105°C. The world has no hydrosphere. The climate is rated as Inferno and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is dynamic and powerful weather systems, driven by the star, sweep across the globe.
Satellite
Kell retains a single natural satellite, a vacuum worldlet named Kirk:
- (IIIa) Kirk (UWP Y300000-0, orbiting at 30 Diameters/310,000 km)
Mainworld Atmosphere
Kell has an Exotic Atmosphere and possesses an unusual gas mix which requires the use of oxygen tanks, but protective suits not necessary, but are recommended. TL–8 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.
Mainworld Geography and Topography
Total surface area: 338 million km².
Native Lifeforms
Volen-Kell System
No world in the system is known to have native life.
History & Background (Dossier)
No information yet available.
World starport
Kell has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.
World technology level
Kell possesses a Technology Level of TL–8.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics, improved telephones, and satellite communication and data networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Improved geothermal and improved batteries.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Advanced automobiles.
- Water: Triphibians and early artificial gills.
- Air: Improved helicopters and hypersonic jets.
- Space: Space shuttles, early space stations, and improved interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
World government
Kell is governed by a Participatory Democracy where eligible voters determine laws and policy. What determines an eligible voter varies. There may be smaller councils or regional bodies to write the policies voted on. Leadership of the government and all members of the bureaucracy are determined by voting population.
