Kassandra is a world suited to becoming an agricultural world, but with a population between 10,000 and 100,000 sophonts, but lacks the capability to produce or process sufficient resources to export its projected agricultural produce. This world is designated an Amber Zone with an environment, laws, customs, life forms, or other conditions make it dangerous to visitors. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Iiradu Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Kassandra, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of an Imperial knight and a baronet. Both are members of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. During the Long Night this world was named Khuder.

Astrography and planetology

Kassandra's primary star — named Sharik (Anglic: Sharik) after the captain of the Vilani ship first exploring the system &mdash is a K7 subgiant, a large but fairly cool star with an unusual spectrum. Anomalies in the spectrum — a very low metal to hydrogen — suggest this star is far older than it seems and may have been refueled at some time in the past.

History and background

The low population rating for the world is based upon the true residential population — a few scientist based at a mostly automatic D class starport. The planet supports a wide variety of flora and fauna and, until a few decades ago, a significant human population. Various diseases among the native animals, usually managed by the human immune system, became more virulent until the Kassandrans were required to evacuate the planet. The remaining people are part of a large research project initialed by the biochemistry department of the University of Nimlakim.

Despite the hazardous nature of the planet, Kassandra is orbited by a research base operated by the Lemkhi Imperial university of space sciences which has grown to include some hundred or so academic and support personnel. The base was set up in 956 to study the system's unusual primary.

Astronomical observatories are situated both on and off the station. There is a constellation of satellites around the star. A single observatory used to be at the planets north pole, but is now unmanned and rarely used since it can only be serviced by people in full environmental suits.
