Karlum is a nonindustrial water world, which has 90% or more of its surface covered in an ocean of water.
- The inhabitants of this world live on the roughly 10% of exposed land mass, in underwater colonies, on city ships, or similar arrangements.
- As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
- It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Kasear Subsector of Vland Sector in the Domain of Vland.
- This world has a nearby Imperial Naval Base, capable of handling warships.

Karlum (B57A500–E) is a windswept water world with a vital but closely related native biosphere. A krill-like group of small shellfish occupies the bottom of the animal food chain, feeding on organic detritus churned in the waves. Many of the steps above them are occupied by an extensive marine animal family that varies from small, aggressive tri-phibians known as flyrahnas through multi-biome pack hunters and large shore-raiding Wave Bears. A parallel group of grazers and filter feeders provide food for the larger hunters. None of the animals found here have fully adapted to life on land, as there is so little of it to occupy.
Humanity here has found the calmer parts of the planet and settled into coastal fortresses. Because the deep water hunters are large enough to wreck most boats, most aquaculture is close to shore or conducted by fliers. The krill species have found a place in the local Vilani food culture, and along with larger meat cuts from more dangerous prey form the primary export here. The shore forts practice a basic social contract form of minimal governance, while the frequency of Wave Bear attacks and Flyrahna pests make carrying weaponry not merely allowed, but mandated.
