The K56 class System Defense Boat is a defensive warship.

Description (Specifications)
In the Caledonian Navy these system defense boats are used to protect shipping and patrol refueling points within a system's gas giants. They feature a streamlined hull with thick armored plates, and three turrets. They carry a triple beam laser battery, a triple missile turret and a pair of plasma guns.

History & Background (Dossier)
These 300 ton Corvettes (SD) vessels are non-jump-capable intra-system escorts and screening ships. There were 226 of the K56-Class built. They are TL-10 and a bare few serve as training vessels. Dozens of others have been sold to private buyers, while dozens more have been scrapped.
