Notes (2018)

A jump governor is a piece of technology discussed in the first edition of High Guard. In the original Book 2 ship design system the Jump-2 and higher drives always used all the fuel regardless of distance. So for example, a jump-2 drive going only 1 parsec would use the full volume of fuel (20% of the ship design). In High Guard, the "Jump Governor" was introduced to allow building ships with higher jump drives, but use less fuel for the shorter jumps.

  • Book 2 (1977) p.14: "Computation of the amount of fuel that a ship will require per trip is based on the size of the drives."
  • Book 2 (1980) p.15: "Ships performing jumps less than their maximum capacity consume fuel at a lower level based on the jump number used."
  • Book 5 (1979) p.32: "Jump Governor: It is possible to procure a jump governor for ships produced according to Book 2. It allows such a ship to utilize fuel more efficiently; instead of consuming all fuel when performing a jump, regardless of jump number, the ship will consume fuel equal to O.1MJn, where Jn is the actual jump number used, rather than the maximum jump number available. Available at any industrial world with tech level 10 or higher. Cost: Cr300 000. Mass: 1 ton. Ships produced according to this book already have the jump governor as part of their drives."
  • Book 5 (1980): Has no reference to a Governor.
