Jijiga is a low-population hellworld with a population less than 10,000 sophonts struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment .

  • This world is a "Twilight Zone World", a planet that is tidally-locked to its star. It has a hot side that permanently faces the star, a cold side that permanently faces away, and a narrow twilight zone in-between.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)

Jijiga has a solitary primary star.

  • It is a red main sequence.

System Data

The worlds of the system have been surveyed. They consist of:

Mainworld Data

Jigiga is tidally locked to its primary star.[2]

  • It experiences libration - a regular wobble - as it orbits, causing the star to move in the sky.

Mainworld Size (S)

Jijiga is a Meso World between 7,200km and 8,800km in diameter. The world has a standard gravity between 0.4G and 0.57G. The horizon will appear about 4km away.

Mainworld Atmosphere (A)

Jijiga has a pressure of 1.50 to 2.49 atmospheres. While a Dense Atmosphere requires no survival gear this atmosphere also contains an unusual taint such as such as disease, a hazardous gas mix, pollutants, or sulfur compounds which requires the use of a Filter Mask. Some taints may require more protective equipment. TL–3 or more advanced survival gear is required to settle this world.

Mainworld Hydrosphere (H)

Jijiga has 15-25% of its surface covered by liquid water or ice. There may be a few small seas. Wilderness refueling is possible. Water for the inhabitants needs to be imported and extensively recycled. These worlds are Hell Worlds or Poor Worlds depending on their atmosphere.

  • The dark side of the world is covered in an unstable crust of frost and fractured ice.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

No centrally held map of the world exists within AAB Library Data records.

History & Background (Dossier)

Comp-Prog-Dav-R-Deitrick-Starter-Trav-Page-16 16-July-2018a.jpg

A tidally locked world in close orbit around an ancient red star, Jijiga is inhabitable along the sunlight terminator and into the night side, kept warm by the heavy atmosphere's sun-driven convection. The air is never still except near the center of Nightside, and is frequently dust-laden.

The planetary system appears to be reacting to the fading star it orbits. Over countless millions of years most of the large family of gas giants has migrated to the outer system, leaving one near the mainworld, overheated but ever so gradually spiralling outward.

Jijiga was never incorporated into the Ziru Sirka, originally being settled during the Rule of Man but never receiving assistance from that state and remaining inhabited throughout the Long Night. This instilled a strong sense of independence and a cultural distrust of large-scale government. Initially refusing to join the Third Imperium when offered membership in the first century, Jijiga saw measurable benefits and progress despite its decision, allowing the world to thrive on the developing fringe for a while. However, it was a marginal world living on its past glories, and as other nearby worlds prospered under Imperial rule the benefits of its independent stance slowly faded away. The world suffers from net emigration, with a small but significant percentage of the population leaving annually for the greater opportunities available within the Imperium. In the 1100s what remains is a near-failing world hamstrung by its stubborn pride.

Jijiga resents Imperial patrols but can do little to stop them, while also appreciating the commerce that flows due to its proximity to the immense economic engine of that same Imperium. For their part, the Imperial Navy has stopped humoring the government of Jijiga in recent years. They jump in, aggressively scan the transponders in the system, and depart after refuelling at one of the gas giants. A sharp eye can tell how recently a patrol has been through the system by how on-edge and touchy the local port authority is.[3]

The system is a major facility for Lone Star Haulers, an Imperial transport and logistics company.

World Starport (St)

Jijiga has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World Population (P)

Jijiga has a population of 8,000 sophonts (thousands).

  • This is a Low Population World and the population would be too low to sustain itself without a little outside assistance. This may represent the home base of a sizable but mostly transient population such as the base of a major starship expedition, the last generation of a dying colony, the first generation of a new colony, or a large outpost that will probably evolve into a colony if not stopped.

World Technology Level (T)

Jijiga possesses a Technology Level of TL–11 or TL-B in Hexadecimal Notation.

World Government (G)

Jijiga is governed by a Representative Democracy where government leadership is representatives elected by eligible voters. What determines an eligible voter varies. The representatives determine policy, including selecting members of the bureaucracy. There can be referendum, votes by eligible voters on specific subjects.

World Law (L)

Jijiga has a moderate level with laws covering many areas of government and interaction. These laws are simple enough that most people can act as their own advocate, though for serious issues a professional is recommended. Law enforcement officials will be present, but not in great numbers. Personal concealable firearms, and anything more destructive, are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Economy

  • Resources: A (abundant)
