The Irhadre of Chanad (Lishun 0935) are a Minor Human Race. They are technologically sophisticated sophonts, aligned to the Third Imperium.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
The Irhadre appearance is distinctive. Most look portly, but the extra body fat is not overly great. Their skin is somewhat parched and taut, normal for a desert race. Their additional body fat doesn't hang loose over their frames, but is evenly distributed; it makes them appear larger but not obese. Dark hair and dark eyes are both the norm. A chance mutation has led to one in about 1,000 Irhadre having blond hair.
Diet[edit]
Chanadre's native biochemistry differs little from Terra's, so there was no need for complex food preparation customs as on Vland.
Society and Culture[edit]
The one aspect of Irhadre culture which most people know about is the ritual servitude in which half of the adult population is kept.
In ancient times, the harshness of Chanad dictated that certain people be charged with certain tasks essential to their society. For instance, they needed people to gather the plants from which they get much of their water. Also, automatic obedience to orders was needed. Ritual slavery was introduced to solve this situation.
Upon reaching adulthood (sixteen years of age), various tests and tasks are administered, along with certain quasi-religious rituals. Based on the interpretation of the results, one may be assigned to life as a Jak'ut (servant) or as a freeman. Jak'ut are assigned to the homes of freemen and to the Irhadre government. Much of Chanad's planetary bureaucracy is run by Jak'ut.
Jak'ut are not eligible to vote or hold public office, although civil service jobs are held exclusively by them. They may not own property or ever use weapons. Their movements are restricted, and they need authorization to leave certain areas.
Jak'ut are well-treated. Provided that they do their jobs well, they will be rewarded. One reward is the right to marry (another Jak'ut) as well as to educate one's children. Both freemen and Jak'ut children attend the same schools, to ensure the fairness of the adulthood ritual. However, poorly working Jak'ut may not win the right to educate their children, and so condemn them to what many outsiders criticise as slavery.
Language[edit]
The official language among the Irhadre is Sue'a Medad, a common dialect that has been in constant use for over 4,000 years.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Chanad's controversial societal model has made the Irhadre quietly infamous, and it is rare for an Irhadre to reach a prominent position or be elevated to the nobility.
