Description / Specifications

A large "heavy cruiser" serving with the 99th Fleet, this class engages enemy ships of the line for imperial naval squadrons in numbered regular combat formations. It is really the size of a small battleship and acts like a battle cruiser. It is equipped like a strike cruiser. It is too big and too lightly armored to fulfill the traditional roles of heavy cruisers. They lack maneuver speed and agility. They are not considered expensive for their size and procurement sold the admiralty on their long range and heavy armaments. The class name is seen as hopeful by some and sadly ironic by others.

  • The vessel is a TL 15 design.

Hull

The Heavy Cruiser is constructed using a 100,000 dTon hull built in a fully streamlined conical structure. The ship is equipped with fuel scoops and on board purification. The hull is unarmored and can not linger long on the line of battle. After most encounters they must head for the nearest Naval base or Naval depot for repair and refit if it is able to escape. They feature spectacular offense combined with amazing strategic mobility handicapped by tactical, defensive fragility.

  • Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency.
  • The hull includes internal grav plates and inertial compensators. All accessible sections of the hull have basic and extended life support.

Engineering

The vessel mounts a jump-6 drive, a maneuver-3 drive, and a power plant 7, giving performance of jump-6 and 3G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 1 and an emergency agility of 3. There is fuel tankage of 67,800 dTons, sufficient for a jump 6. The power plant has a four week duration.

  • The engineering section has a main control room.
  • The jump drive utilises a lanthanum hull grid.
  • The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.

Main Section

Adjacent to the bridge is a computer model/9 fib: the vessel carries an additional backup computer model/9 fib. All work stations are equipped with dynamically reconfigurable, linked holographic displays. There are 376 staterooms and 347 low berths for the frozen watch. Double occupancy accommodations are required for all crew. Cargo capacity amounts to a 2 ton ship's locker/armory and 180 dTons of additional missile battery rounds for more sustained fire missions.

  • The vessel is fitted with radio, laser and maser system wide communications equipment, an advanced active and passive EMS sensor arrays, full ECM, and an avionics suite.

Crew

The Provincial Carrier requires 747 crew: 50x command, 220x engineering, 164x gunnery, 200x service, and 13x Flight. There are 100 ship board security to resist boarding attempts. The security are sometimes swapped out for fleet marines, and cargo spaces can be converted into additional bunk spaces.

Weapons

The ship is built around a massive factor T particle accelerator spinal mount which can overwhelm most targets with a few hits. The crippling critical hits render most targets operational kills in short order. There are four 100 dton meson bays, and twenty 50 dton missile bays for destroying escort craft and long range bombardment respectively. The four repulsor bays help keep missile strikes away. Two hundred triple beam laser turrets and two hundred dual fusion gun turrets are organized into twenty batteries each for point defense work. Two hundred and ninety triple sand caster turrets in 29 batteries assist with defense. There are factor 9 nuclear dampers and factor 9 meson screen and each has an emergency back up to fail over to in the event of extensive battle damage.

Subcraft

The ship carries four 50 dton Cutters as interface and service craft. These are sometimes swapped out for combat craft. Each Cutter has its own dedicated hangar.
