Hylan is a poor, low-population desert hellworld, with a population of less than 10,000 sophonts struggling to survive in a inhospitable environment.
- Living on a hellworld is a constant struggle. Nearly every day and sometimes even hourly, the inhabitants of this world face life-threatening challenges.
- This world has no free-standing water.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Redoubt Subsector of Divide Sector.
Astrography and Planetology
This star system is detailed using the Fringian Variant System Description.
- It is a part of the Hylan Spur.

System Data
Cardor-Hylan System
The primary is Cardor, a huge red giant star. It has a luminosity of 470 Sols, a mass of 6.3 Sols, and a diameter of 87.7 million km – the corona extends as far as 0.29 AU, beyond orbital position (I). The inner system consists of (II) a very hot small gas giant, (V) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (VI) a trace atmosphere inner world, (VII) an exotic atmosphere stormworld, and (VIII) a corrosive atmosphere inferno world – orbital position (I) lies within the star and orbital positions (III) and (IV) are empty. (IX) Aether orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (X) a thin atmosphere hospitable world, (XI) a ringed large gas giant, and (XII) a small ice giant form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.
Mainworld Data
(IX) Hylan
(IX) Hylan is designated the mainworld. It orbits Cardor at a mean distance of 20.2 AU (3 billion km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 36 years 63 days and a rotation period of 34.5 hours. The axial tilt is 19 degrees. Hylan has a diameter of 7,935 km, a density of 4.99 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.56 G. The world is geologically active. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.57 bar and a composition of 81% nitrogen, 18% oxygen, and 1% argon, carbon dioxide, neon and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the extremely low humidity within the atmosphere, which causes respiratory problems if breathed. Hylan is a desert world: approximately 0.3% of the surface is covered in lakes of liquid water. Mean surface temperature: 45°C. The climate is rated as Hot and experiences moderate seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is dynamic and strong weather systems driven by the star sweep across the globe.
Satellites
Hylan retains two natural satellites, an exotic atmosphere stormworld named Montain and a trace atmosphere worldlet named Purnell:
- (IXa) Montain (UWP Y3A0000-0, orbiting at 40 Diameters/318,000 km)
- (IXb) Purnell (UWP Y110000-0, orbiting at 45 Diameters/357,000 km)
Mainworld Geography and Topography
Total surface area: 198 million km², Land surface area: 197.4 million km², Water surface area: 600,000 km².
Native Lifeforms
Hylan, the mainworld, has primitive native life, consisting entirely of subsurface cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of moisture. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.
The cold marginally hospitable world lying in orbital position (X) (within the H+ region of the outer system) has primitive cryophile native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that thrive in the harsh conditions. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.
No other world in the system is known to have native life.
History & Background (Dossier)
No information yet available.
World starport
Hylan has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World technology level
Hylan possesses a Technology Level of TL–6.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone, radio, and television.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fission power generation, advanced water and wind generation of electricity.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, early ATV's, and dedicated AFV's.
- Water: Amphibious vehicles, improved submersibles, and early SCUBA gear.
- Air: Early jet aircraft and rotorcraft VTOL's.
- Space: Early unmanned rocket delivery systems and early manned orbital rockets.
World government
Hylan is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions in the government. These positions are inherited by member of the group or their family members. The organization may be monarchy, with titles passed to family members. Or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Or the organization may be more typical organization with positions of power inherited.
