Hyades Cluster

The Hyades are a roughly spherical open cluster of hundreds of stars whose center is located at approximately 47pc from Terra in the Terran-sky constellation of Taurus. The Hyades Cluster is also known as Caldwell 41.

Description (Specifications)

The five brightest members of the Hyades Cluster have evolved away from the Main Sequence and are now on the giant branch. Four of these stars, (Gamma Tauri, Delta¹ Tauri, Epsilon Tauri, and Theta¹ Tauri/Theta² Tauri), form the "head" of Taurus the Bull. The fifth is Zeta¹ Tauri. Epsilon Tauri, also known as Ain, has a gas giant exoplanet candidate.

• The cluster core, where stars are most densely packed, has a radius of 2.7pc, and the cluster's tidal radius is 10pc. However, about one-third of confirmed member stars have been observed well outside this boundary, in the cluster's extended halo; these stars are probably in the process of escaping from its gravitational influence.
• Confirmed cluster members include numerous bright stars of spectral types A (at least 21), F (about 60), and G (about 50). All of these star types are concentrated much more densely within the tidal radius of the Hyades than within an equivalent 10-parsec radius about Terra.
• The lower mass stars associated with the Hyades' cluster – spectral types K and M – include at least 48 K-type dwarfs along with about a dozen M-type dwarfs of spectral types M0-M2, as well as about 12 brown dwarfs.

The Hyades lie at an average distance of approximately 47pc from Terra, and are located in a generally Rimward/Rimspinward direction from Terra at bearing 180.1^o Galactic Longitude and -22.3^o South Galactic Latitude.

The core-stars of the Hyades are located in Subsector A of the Canopus Sector, but the cluster as a whole has extended members that range as far as Aldebaran Sector.
