The Hivers are a very technologically sophisticated sophont species.

* They are a Major Non-Human Race with a Non-humanoid appearance.

* Hivers are a Major Race, with a modified six-fold radial symmetry bearing a superficial similarity to Terran Starfish, who control a large federation trailing the Imperium known as the Hive Federation.

Biology (Physical Sophontology)
Hivers are a unique species with few species bearing any real commonalities with Hivers, either in mindset, physiology, or otherwise. In a universe where humanoids seem to predominate, they are non-humanoids. In a universe that favors the violent and selfish, Hivers are altruists and seek to elevate life. In a world of intense competition and deadly contests of survival, the Hivers build vast, peaceful communities and make friends where enemies once existed. How do such non-conformists survive? Only the Hivers truly know, or do they?

The Hivers of Guaran are a Major Race with a modified six-fold radial symmetry and technologically advanced sophonts.
* Hivers were evolved from troglobytic (cave-dwelling) creatures who developed mutualistic relationships with other cave-dwellers.

* Hivers like planets of size 6 or less, with thin or standard atmospheres and unvarying climates.

This species developed intelligence primarily in response to climatic factors.

Proto-Hiver Culture & Society: Originally, they lived in the tunnels and built-up mounds of the Snohl, a large (1,000 kilogram) burrowing animal. In exchange for shelter, they gave food. They farmed fungus and foraged outside for decaying vegetation and dead animals as a source of food for the fungus.
* Hivers are unique among major races in that they had a complex culture before becoming sentient.

* Burrowers were allowed to graze in the farm tunnels. Hivers ate the fungus and whatever fresh food they could find outside. Intelligence arose as the outside environment changed, forcing the foraging parties to travel farther to discover new sources of food and fertilizer; foragers advanced from simple scavenging and gathering efforts to complex cooperative efforts of hunting and trapping live game.

* Today, fungus remains the staple of the Hiver diet; fungus growing is a highly developed art. Most buildings retain the beehive shape and large underground tunnel complexes of the original burrowers, but they are constructed by machines; the burrowers, known as Snohl, are now reduced to the secondary function of keeping the tunnels clean. Hiver attachment to them is essentially nonrational; they just feel more comfortable with Snohl around.

* The head is a modification of one of the limbs and contains six eyestalks and six manipulative tentacles, plus paired infrared sensor organs. The other five limbs are identical (except for slight modifications of the hand opposite the head) and are used as arms and legs indiscriminately. Each limb ends in a six-fingered radial hand. Fingers are very flexible and have muscular suction cups on the lower surface about halfway to the tips. Hiver arms and hands are generally weaker than a human's but are very tough and difficult to injure.

* The mouth or cloaca (digestive and defaeative opening) is on the lower surface of the body. There is no sound-producing organ, but hivers do have three ears placed around the neck near the head.

Parental Instinct: Hivers have only one sex. Reproductive cells are exchanged each time that Hivers meet, using the modified rear hand, the process has been termed by humans "shaking hands". The cells are kept in a reproductive pouch on the lower body surface where they conjugate and exchange genetic material. Once every forty days or so, a cell will develop into a larva, which then drops from the parent's body.

* The strong Hiver parental instinct can be considered an offshoot of the Hiver instinct for racial survival. To humans, this parental instinct seems somehow warped. For example, Hivers are horrified by the idea that their larvae might somehow find its way to a world where there is no nest to receive it. To prevent this, Hiver ships are carefully fumigated to kill any hiding larvae before landing or docking, and extreme measures are undertaken to ensure that no Hiver crewmember deposits larvae where there is no nest.

Terrans have a saying that "curiosity killed the cat" used to warn of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation. This proverb might apply to Hivers as well, but they still wholeheartedly ignore it. Hivers are endless curious and expansively experimental. They love fads, the nouveau, and everything avant garde. They innovate and experiment in everyway of thought possible to other sophont species, and then in another few ways that no one else had even thought to imagine. Expect the unexpected when encountering Hivers and their protégés.

As with every other aspect of Hiver life, they are practically endlessly diverse. Hivers not only believe in a myriad of different ideas, but those same differences in ideas only bring Hivers closer together, while other species might be drawn apart or balkanized. Hivers love the spice of life and truly embrace multi-culturism to a degree no one else could imagine. Hivers also take great glee in trying out the belief systems of other species. They form clubs about those religions and beliefs, and experiment and explore those dogmas. Some sophont species have been offended at this appropriation of their beliefs, while others have learned something new. However other sophont species felt, the Hivers fully embraced and enjoyed what they were doing.

One of the most popular belief systems throughout Hiver society is "Makerism," a sort of deistic universalism with monetheistic tendencies. Makerists believe in a universally-common clockmaker deity, who created the universe as an experiment in chaos and expects his children to build order out of morass of the raw universe. Hivers, of course, believe that manipulation, is the most effective way to bestow order upon the universe. However, the philosophy strongly cautions against too much order, and warns Hivers to be flexible and adaptive with their actions, thoughts, and beliefs. It also absolutely holds the veneration of all life as a prime value. Makerists are one of the many interest groups that influence Hivers to foster, uplift, and help younger or less technological societies to develop under the protective aegis of the Hive Federation.

Hivers have strong cultural biases against tribalism with the inverse also holding true. Hivers embrace the idea of life as a unified whole with all forms of life being part of one greater people. That is one of the many reasons that Hivers attempt to genetically engineer and "manipulate" the species around them. They want to unify the galaxy and draw cultures away from narrow nationalism, jingoism, speciesism, and other such petty views by Hiver ways of thinking.

The Hivers are an ancient, venerable, and secretive people as well as one the few races that doesn't appear to have been created or manipulated by the Ancients. Their history goes back many millennia, but no one really knows anything for sure about them, since their "facts" often don't match up with those of any other Hiver. This confounds many other races, but makes perfect sense to most Hivers. Why is that? Studying Hiver history can be highly frustrating due to these contradictions in dates, histories, and practically every other aspect of Hiver society.

The Hiver Economy has been described as "an economist's nightmare" and "capitalistic communism" by human writers. It is very difficult for non-Federation members to understand, though it seems to work admirably for them. Basically, Hivers have a strong desire for material comforts, and, hence, the wealth that makes these possible. But they rely on a system of credit in which the individual has a positive or negative credit balance with its particular nest. When an individual changes nests, the new nest acquires the individual's credit balance, either paying to, or being paid by, the previous nest. In the interim, individuals can draw on the nest's accounts for virtually any amount, whether for simple necessities such as food and shelter, or for large material items.

The Hivers of Guaran (Ricenden 0827) are a Major Race with a modified six-fold radial symmetry and technologically advanced sophonts.

Biology (Physical Sophontology)[edit]

Hivers are a unique species with few species bearing any real commonalities with Hivers, either in mindset, physiology, or otherwise. In a universe where humanoids seem to predominate, they are non-humanoids. In a universe that favors the violent and selfish, Hivers are altruists and seek to elevate life. In a world of intense competition and deadly contests of survival, the Hivers build vast, peaceful communities and make friends where enemies once existed.

Evolution & Environment (Epigenetics)[edit]

Descended from omnivore gatherer/scavenger stock, they are the most alien of the major races. Hivers evolved from troglodytic (cave-dwelling) creatures who developed mutualistic relationships with other cave-dwellers. Hivers like planets of size 6 or less, with thin or standard atmospheres and unvarying climates.

Overview:

  • Prefers a temperate-cold environment
  • Prefers hilly and forested areas
  • Fossorial dwellers (underground burrows)

Sophonce (Evolution)[edit]

Proto-Hiver Culture & Society: Originally, they lived in the tunnels and built-up mounds of the Snohl, a large (1,000 kilogram) burrowing animal. In exchange for shelter, they gave food. They farmed fungus and foraged outside for decaying vegetation and dead animals as a source of food for the fungus.

Burrowers were allowed to graze in the farm tunnels.

Today, fungus remains the staple of the Hiver diet; fungus growing is a highly developed art.

  • Please see Snohl for more information

Climate & Ecotope (Environment)[edit]

This species holds the following environmental preferences:

  • Terrestrial planet
  • Cold climate
  • Forest or hilly ecotopes
  • Standard gravity
  • Standard atmosphere

Colonies: The Hivers have colonized only those planets with climates most pleasant to themselves; if the planet has no predators that like to eat Hiver larvae, they are imported. Because of the high birth rate, a colony will rapidly fill up to its maximum population level of a few hundred million and will then stabilize. Hiver enclaves, for commercial or scientific purposes, are found on worlds of more extreme characteristics than the preferred Hiver environmental range.

Genetic Code (Genotype)[edit]

Hivers use the following IISS code:

  • SDEIEC-S
    • Strength
    • Dexterity
    • Endurance
    • Intelligence
    • Education
    • Curiosity
    • Sanity
  • More complex genetic coding data available to qualified personnel upon request.

Anatomy & Physiology (Phenotype)[edit]

Hivers average 1.5 meters from ground to top of upraised head and weigh about 150 kg. Hivers exhibit a modified six-fold radial symmetry; the body has a calcareous internal skeleton consisting of a series of rings supporting the limbs and a fused carapace protecting the brain and internal organs.

The head is a modification of one of the limbs and contains six eyestalks and six manipulative tentacles, plus paired infrared sensor organs.

The mouth or cloaca (digestive and defaeative opening) is on the lower surface of the body. There is no sound-producing organ, but hivers do have three ears placed around the neck near the head.

Body Plan (Appearance)[edit]

  • Non-Human Race
  • Modified six-fold radial symmetry (r-ial)
  • Non-humanoid
  • Hexapods (6-ped)
    • Each of the six limbs has six digits for fine motor work
    • 5 dual-use limbs (locomotor & manipulatory) "arm-legs"
      • One of the five "arm-legs" also possesses reproductive organs
    • 1 limb mounts sensory bundle "head"
      • The "head" limb also mounts eyes on stalks in-between the fine motor digits.
      • The "head" limb can be used for manipulation.
  • Body consist of one segment: central body (craniopod)
    • Central body consists of brain case and primary organ housing armored within a bone cage.
      • Digestive orifice is a dual-use cloaca (consumptive & excretory)
      • Has no oral language. Uses a combination of body language, haptism (touch), and written language.

Biochemistry (Function)[edit]

Hivers have a conventional carbon-water based biochemistry.

Respiration (Reaction)[edit]

Hivers use a conventional respiration cycle consisting of:

  • Oxygen-nitrogen inhalant
  • Carbon dioxide exhalant

Ecosystem & Population (Ecology)[edit]

Hivers are primarily a nocturnal species and are active by night and rest during the day. They use a wide variety of technologies to master their environment including terraforming.

Diet & Trophics (Consumption)[edit]

  • Omnivore/scavenger
    • Homeotherm
    • Harvests a variety of vegetable matter including plants, fungi, and molds.
    • Eats a variety of smaller animal-like organisms including insectoid analogues.

Gender & Sexuality (Reproduction)[edit]

Hivers have the following reproductive characteristics::

  • One gender
    • Gonochory (unisexualism or sexual monomorphism)
  • (asexual reproduction): (parthenogenesis)
    • Reproduce through conjugal or non-conjugal intercourse "shaking hands"
    • Promiscuous mating system
  • Viviparous birth
    • (Semelparous): Uses r-selection and have many offspring that require little time to raise to maturity.
Further Detail[edit]

Parental Instinct: Hivers have only one sex. Reproductive cells are exchanged each time that Hivers meet, using the modified rear hand, the process has been termed by humans "shaking hands". The cells are kept in a reproductive pouch on the lower body surface where they conjugate and exchange genetic material. Once every forty days or so, a cell will develop into a larva, which then drops from the parent's body.Hivers go through at least three and sometimes four life stages: 1. Hiver Larvae 2. Hiver Yearling 3. Hiver Adult and... 4. Nest Leader.

The strong Hiver parental instinct can be considered an offshoot of the Hiver instinct for racial survival.

Adolescence & Lifecycle (Ontogeny)[edit]

Hivers have three primary life stages and some achieve a fourth sociological stage.

Hiver Lifecycle
# Stage Sophonce Aspect Remarks
1. Larvae

(infant)

Animal

/ Proto-sophont

Physiological Hiver young are known as Larvae.
  • Hiver planets are mostly wilderness, and the larva enter the wilds, where most are killed. After about a year, survivors return to civilization, where they are welcomed into any nest and begin their education as citizens. Hiver Parental Instinct is very strong, and the young are adopted by the entire nest. (Note that this instinct applies only to the year-old returnees; Hivers have no concern for the younger larvae, and in fact they consider them minor pests.)
2. Yearling

(adolescent)

Sophont Physiological Yearlings are maturing Hiver larvae which have emerged from the wilds.
3. Adult

(adult)

Sophont Physiological Adults are any Hivers above the age of 14. They are fully mature physically and intellectually.
4. Nest Leader

(elder)

Sophont Sociological A Nest leader is a Hiver that becomes a senior after several decades of service. This Hiver is the individual that makes routine decisions and assignments, and who keeps the nest's records. Leaders have learned how to lead and direct others toward the accomplishment of basic goals and have responsibilities ranging from military leadership to business management.

Psychology (Cultural Sophontology)[edit]

Hivers are not an overly aggressive race and are non-confrontational.

  • At the same time, they are hyper-social, very gregarious, and keen hagglers and poker players.
  • Hiver personalities tend to be very flexible, a condition known as socio-plasticity.
  • In other words, a Hiver has no problem telling you exactly what it thinks you want to hear.
  • Extremely few Hivers are malicious and most exhibit altruism for all forms of life, exhibited in the Hive Federation's focus on developing an interstellar community and raising other species to higher levels of civilization.
  • Hiver relations are motivated by a strange combination of species loyalty and intra-species competition through the art of manipulation.
  • Being lifelong, inveterate "manipulators", Hivers tend to think very fast on their "feet" with many exhibiting mathematical savantism.
  • Hivers are endlessly curious and can rarely resist a good mystery.

Goals (Motivation)[edit]

No Population Pressure: Because of the nature of their reproduction, Hivers have never experienced the population pressures so important to Human history. The population of the homeworld is now only a few hundred million, only ten times greater than it was in prehistoric times.

  • Predators control the young; when the adult survival rate rises, thus increasing the numbers of young produced, the predator population increases proportionately and the balance is maintained.
  • Space colonization arose not from pressure but from curiosity, with which Hivers are amply endowed.

Expectations[edit]

  • Benevolent competition
  • Intellectual curiosity
  • Deep respect for life
  • Responsibility to sophontdom
  • Progress equals novelty
  • Governments are temporary, ad hoc organizations, not institutions meant to last forever in monolithic form
  • Parties and hobbies should be a central part of life
  • Secrecy is both expected and abhorred according to a very complex set of unwritten rules

Traditions[edit]

  • Little regard for institutions of power
  • Very different take on honesty and subjective truth
  • Curious blend of belief in individual rights and communal responsibilities
  • Belief in societal collaboration and individual manipulation
  • Compelling belief in the uplift of promising species
  • Strong belief in multi-species tolerance and diversity
  • Regular, frequent social gatherings and colloquia to share knowledge

Belief System & Philosophy (Mindset)[edit]

Hive society is highly individualistic. The term "Hive" results from an early human misconception which stems from the appearance of the Hivers' building and tunnel complexes. Nests contain from five to five hundred individuals, who are usually centered around some common endeavor.

  1. Manipulation
    1. One of the most common endeavors and highest achievements for Hiver individuals or groups is the act of (social) Manipulation.
    2. See Manipulation for more information.
  2. Curiosity
    1. One of the most central values to Hiver society is that of curiosity. Hivers love to experiment and explore. Whatever is out there, Hivers want to know about it, and, if it can be done, some Hiver out there is planning to eventually do it. Hivers are endlessly curious about every aspect of life, interstellar society, and the cosmos.
    2. Space colonization arose not from population pressure but from curiosity, with which Hivers are amply endowed.

Philosophy[edit]

Terrans have a saying that "curiosity killed the cat" used to warn of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation. This proverb might apply to Hivers as well, but they still wholeheartedly ignore it. Hivers are endless curious and expansively experimental. They love fads, the nouveau, and everything avant garde. They innovate and experiment in everyway of thought possible to other sophont species, and then in another few ways that no one else had even thought to imagine. Expect the unexpected when encountering Hivers and their protégés.

Belief System[edit]

Hivers, of course, believe that manipulation is the most effective way to bestow order upon the universe.

Interventionist Stance[edit]

Hivers have strong cultural biases against tribalism with the inverse also holding true. Hivers embrace the idea of life as a unified whole with all forms of life being part of one greater people. That is one of the many reasons that Hivers attempt to genetically engineer and "manipulate" the species around them. They want to unify the galaxy and draw cultures away from narrow nationalism, jingoism, speciesism, and other such petty views by Hiver ways of thinking. Hivers fully believe in interventionism on every level and abhor isolationism. They are strong galacticists and think that strong, participatory involvement with interstellar affairs is both an obligation and a responsibility.

Culture & Society (Ethnology)[edit]

While one hundred is an average size for a nest and was the size in pre-civilized times, larger groups may come together for some civilized purpose such as large manufacturing companies or universities. Small nests are usually spaceship crews or isolated research parties. A young hiver will spend his first fifteen years in his home nest; thereafter, nest changes may take place as often as a modern human might change jobs.

Social Organization: 1116[edit]

Hiver society has a variety of governing organizations. See Nest for more information

  • The worlds of the Hivers have grouped together to form the Hive Federation.
    • Nations may group together to form a world government.
      • Cities may group together to form a nation-state.
        • Nests may group themselves together to form a city or city-state.
          • The nest is the basic unit of social organization, akin to what humans call a nuclear family.

Cultural Hierarchies: 1116[edit]

This species ranks its members in the following manners:

  • Physiological maturity
  • Sociological standing
    • Evaluated by "manipulatory" achievement

Many conjecture that the Hivers are one of the most egalitarian societies within Charted Space.

Language (Linguistic Sophontology)[edit]

This species is known to communicate with other species using the following methods.

Language & Letters (Communication)[edit]

This species uses the following types of language to communicate:

  • Body Language
  • No spoken language
    • Later adopted Gurviotic for the "noisy" species
  • Haptic language (touch)
  • Visual language (sign language)
  • Written language

The Hiver language is a combination of arm/tentacle waving and physical contact. The written language is ideographic and is used as a standard language among the races of the Hive Federation.

Some outsiders, primarily Solomani, call it Hiver Sign Language or (HSL). Technically speaking, it is far more complicated than interstellar mainstream Human Sign Language (HSL), but Hivers can understand it even without the haptic (touch) or other features when other sophonts attempt to use it.

Hivers talking among themselves use all three aspects of language (gesture, touch, and writing) at once, a process capable of great subtlety and sophistication, but largely unintelligible to the outsider.

The Gurvin language is used for spoken (oral and aural) situations.

Hivers common use vo-corders, devices which change written language into aural language, when conversing with most other races, who use oral languages.

Aesthetics (Symbology)[edit]

This species holds the following values regarding art, architecture, ornamentation, etc.

  • Septaphilia: Place great value on the number 7, or sept. For some reason, they are not fond of evens.
  • Hyper-tolerant: Have extremely few societal taboos or prohibitions. Near endlessly open to new ideas and experimentation.
  • Organiform architecture: Fond of rounded shapes, domes, ovals, spheres and non-Euclidian architecture. Ironic in that many schools of Hiver starship architecture are often focused around the opposite, extremely square, boxy ships.
  • Claustrophilia: Hivers like small, cramped domiciles with defined spaces and solid walls. Small cell-like sleeping nests and quarters are the norm for Hivers. Communal areas are larger which includes dining areas, freshers (no privacy taboo), and social gathering spots.
  • Gregarious: Hivers are hyper-social and while not overly afraid of being alone, monophobic, they greatly prefer the company of others of their kind as well as other sophonts, whom they look upon benevolently as parents do upon their children.

Morality (Ethics)[edit]

This species holds the following values regarding a sense of right and wrong:

  • Preservation of all sophontic life.
  • Appreciation of a clever act
  • A strong belief in patience and a lack of haste. The steady, patent, and manipulative tortoise wins the race, not the speedy hare.
  • A belief in the value of community and interstellar common society.

History (Archaeological Sophontology)[edit]

The Hivers are an ancient, venerable, and secretive people as well as one the few races that doesn't appear to have been created or manipulated by the Ancients. Their history goes back many millennia, but no one really knows anything for sure about them, since their "facts" often don't match up with those of any other Hiver. This confounds many other races, but makes perfect sense to most Hivers. Why is that? Studying Hiver history can be highly frustrating due to these contradictions in dates, histories, and practically every other aspect of Hiver society.

Civilization (Societal Sophontology)[edit]

The Hive Federation is one of the largest and most successful of the Major Race Supra-polities. The Federation contains dozens, perhaps hundreds, of member races and sub-polities. Hivers enjoy diversity and are always ready to welcome a new species or culture into their fold.

Government & Politics (Leadership)[edit]

The Hiver (government) is known as the Hive Federation, a Human term for the loose interstellar community dominated by the Hivers. The Hivers have only one culture and one language; the Hiver genotype (with individual variations similar in degree to differences between individual humans of the same race) is also constant.

The Hive Federation, which also bears some properties of a Confederation, is as close to a stateless society (anarchy) as can be found in the major states of Charted Space.

The Federation government (if such a term is at all applicable) is mostly concerned with maintaining the uniformity of the Hiver culture and species. This is accomplished by frequent reproductive embassies from one planet to another Members of many different nests will "shake hands" (actually their means of exchanging reproductive cells) with everyone nearby in a sort of farewell party and will then board a large embassy ship bound for a far-off world. Once there they will meet with as many people as possible, shaking hands and exchanging news, art, gossip, scientific information, political views, and so on for about a year. They will then return home for another year-long round of parties, discussions, and handshaking.

Military & Intelligence (Force Projection)[edit]

The Hive Federation Navy is the main instrument of military force. Hivers came late to the concept of war and are more comfortable with high-tech, long-range oriented violence; they dislike the personal approach of ground combat.

When ground forces are absolutely needed, other races of the Federation generally supply the troops. Federation armed forces are essentially a deterrent force and are seldom used as an instrument of policy. The Ithklur have long been known as the the premier shock troops of the Hive Federation Navy and are rightly feared as some of the most capable warriors in known space.

Business & Trade (Economy)[edit]

Hiver industry and business excel at communications technology and robot construction. Major exports include artificial and computer languages, translators, robotics, and sophisticated electronic hardware of all types.

Hivers are known for their widely-ranging merchants, willing to travel the lengths of the galaxy, to exchange in the trade of ideas, philosophies, technologies, manufactured goods, and resources amongst other items of exchange.

Research & Technology (Knowledge)[edit]

Hivers are naturally curious and conduct large amounts of scientific research. Hiver traders are known for trading innovative technologies.

Astrography (Range)[edit]

Hivers can be found throughout Charted Space although especially in the areas within and near the Hive Federation.

This species can primarily be found within Charted Space in the following locations:
