System Data

Rath-Hirida System

The primary is Rath, an ordinary orange main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.42 Sols, a mass of 0.825 Sols and a diameter of 1.263 million km. The inner system consists of (I) a very thin atmosphere inner world, and (II) a vacuum worldlet. (III) Hirida orbits within the habitable zone and is designated the mainworld. (IV) a thin atmosphere hospitable world, (V) a small gas giant, (VI) a small ice giant, and (VII) a vacuum iceworld form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Quine Subsystem

The companion is Quine, an ordinary orange main sequence star lying some 3900 AU from Rath. It has a luminosity of 0.352 Sols, a mass of 0.774 Sols and a diameter of 1.168 million km. The inner system consists of (II) a dense stony planetoid belt – orbital position (I) is empty. (III) Kavanagh, a standard atmosphere hospitable world orbits in the habitable zone. (IV) a large gas giant, (V) a ringed small gas giant, (VI) a sparse icy planetoid belt, and (VI) an exotic atmosphere bigworld form the outer zone. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(III) Hirida

(III) Hirida is designated the mainworld. It orbits Rath at a mean distance of 0.72 AU (107.7 million km), within the systems habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 53 days 22 hours and a rotation period of 68.75 hours. The axial tilt is 13 degrees. Hirida has a diameter of 8,199 km, a density of 5.41 g/cm³ and a surface gravity of 0.62 G. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, with a mean surface pressure of 0.58 bar and a composition of 80% nitrogen (N₂), 19% oxygen (O₂), and 1% argon (Ar), carbon dioxide (CO₂), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Approximately 63% of the surface is covered in oceans of liquid water: average tidal ranges are around 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 19°C. The atmosphere is active and powerful weather systems driven by the oceans and the star sweep the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 211 million km², Land surface area: 158 million km², Water surface area: 35 million km². Hirida's hydrosphere, the Circle Sea, is concentrated into a broad band around the equator and tropical latitudes, giving way to densely vegetated islands and archipelagos in the northern and southern temperate zones. The poles and subpolar regions are each dominated by huge continents (named Nord and Sude respectively) that are barren at their centers but have thriving ecosystems around their coastal fringes. Juniper, the largest of the southern islands, is the site of the main settlement.

Native Lifeforms

Hirida has abundant native life. Flora tends towards multiple tall narrow stems and has circular foliage, typically a greenish-purple colour. Their metabolic functions power the process of atmospheric renewal. Native fauna comes in many shapes and sizes but the single most common body pattern is Bilateral HBS-T-AN-LL-T, with a skeleton interior, ichor fluids, and covered in scales. Native lifeforms have a substantially different chemistry to humans and are not generally consumable.

(III) Kavanagh

(III) Kavanagh (UWP Y565000-0) is categorised as a hospitable world. It orbits Quine, the companion star, at a mean distance of 0.67 AU (100.2 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 227 days 17 hours and a rotation period of 14.25 hours. The axial tilt is 12 degrees. Kavanagh has a diameter of 7,846 km, a density of 5.38 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.61 G. Its atmosphere is rated as Standard, with a mean surface pressure of 0.88 bar and a composition of 81% nitrogen (N₂), 18% oxygen (O₂), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. Approximately 47% of the surface is covered in seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.2m. Mean surface temperature: 9°C. The atmosphere is active and weather systems powered by the seas and the star roll across the globe. The climate is seasonal.

Secondary World Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 193 million km², Land surface area: 158 million km², Water surface area: 35 million km². The northern hemisphere is utterly dominated by Coricus Mons, an enormous peak with a height of over 32,000m and a footprint of more than 800,000 km². It is surrounded by largely flat plains. Kavanagh's hydrosphere is concentrated into three major bodies, the Crescent Sea in the northern hemisphere and the Medensa Sea and the Sea of Han, occupying the majority of the southern hemisphere and much of equator. The polar regions are covered by permanent icecaps.

Native Lifeforms

Kavanagh has abundant but primitive native life. All lifeforms are microscopic multicellular organisms, lacking any clear distinction between plants and animals. Their metabolic functions serve to power the process of atmospheric renewal.

An agricultural colony which has achieved independence largely by chance and neglect. When larger interstellar states wished to incorporate them, they were almost painlessly absorbed and when they were gone the natives were, for the most part, unperturbed. A simple quiet life is the goal of most survivors here. Agricultural abundance is key to the stable economy and cordial interstellar trade arrangements. Businesses are fair and honest. Merchants are reliable and dependable. Reputation is important and a handshake or a promise are legally binding concepts. You are held accountable for what you say and do. Just joking around, lying, cheating and stealing have the harshest punishments. Justice is swift and without mercy nor reprieve. The peace and serenity require nothing less. Citizens are quiet, choose their words carefully and only speak when absolutely necessary. They normally refuse to speak with outsiders at all, the risks are too great. Custom and traditions are sacred here. Governmental ministers trained in dealing with outsiders are required for visitors to avoid incidents. Colors of building and clothing are muted, dour and drab to outsiders. Things are plain and unornamented, solid and functional architecture holds sway. There are nearly no public displays of art or sculpture. Ostentatious wealth is not openly displayed, jewelry is frowned upon.

The stories of the dark times and the threats from space are kept alive in the cultural knowledge and citizens are conservative and risk averse as a result. Insular and secure if far preferable than cosmopolitan and dead in their eyes. Among close knit friend and family groupings life is much more relaxed. Certain days, holidays, harvest festivals give people a chance to blow off steam in a more relaxed and consequence free context. These are the only times when fermented spirits can be consumed. Ethanol is prized for other uses most of the time. Gift giving is associated with some of these seasonal celebrations. Some contests are held and a little friendly betting is allowed, and strictly controlled. There are no casinos and recreational gambling establishments permitted on planet beyond the extra territorial line at the starport. Weddings are scheduled to coincide with these dates as well. Off schedule events are considered unlucky or jinxed. Bright happy colors, and elaborate costumes are on display during these special times, parades, singing, simple instrumental music and dancing are common.

Security monitors are seen as trusted allies and see something, say something is a fact of life. These patrols are unarmed but are rigorously trained in very effective forms of practical martial arts with an emphasis on subduals, submissions and painful joint locks and nerve strikes. Skill with blades and firearms is rare. In public family matriarchs and patriarchs conduct business quickly and efficiently with a minimum of fuss. The young, very old, infirm, sick and ill are kept from sight, sequestered and secure. Especially during “business” hours. Public spaces are reserved for people who have things to do, wandering visitors and tourists are not welcome at these times. Agencies and bureaus ensure efficient allocation of resources and the governmental councils insist everyone contribute appropriately to the common good and pull their weight. Communal care in centralized facilities ensure all levels of society are looked after. There are no homeless or hungry allowed to wander freely. The insane are not allowed to wander lost and untreated, such treatment is seen as shameful. All are cared for at communal expense and shared responsibility. However, if you are physically able, you are expected to be very productive and efficient. Being lazy and slothful are not commonly acceptable options. Writers, thinkers and artists struggle here. If you are not farming, making something, selling something, or transporting something you are not seen as very useful.

One of the important food resources is a genetically modified species which is enzymatically compatible with human digestion and nutritional requirements. This species, the Hiridan Water Flea, masses about 2kg and is amphibious with filter feeder abilities. They are poikilothermic, heterotrophic consumers. They have a bilaterally symmetrical, hard exoskeletal structure and jointed legs akin to an arthropod. They have six pairs of walking legs linked to gas exchange membranes which allow them to extract oxygen from the water and the thin atmosphere. They can filter feed from the microscopic planktonic life forms and can reduce carrion and opportunistic feeding with grinding mandibular mouth parts. They are incapable of effectively injuring a human and rely on prolific reproduction, burrowing and hiding to avoid predators. They dwell in the mudflats, seashores and flood plains of fresh and salty water. They burrow rapidly into sand and mud and navigate silty waters with dedicated olfactory and gustatory sensors adjacent to their mouth parts near the anterior end. Their dorsal protective shells are hard enough to be processed into polished textiles and manufactured goods. They are boiled, steamed whole or disarticulated, shelled and fried in seasoned grain based batter or fatty lipids. Locals stake out wide areas and drive away large predators and harvest the adults after they release their planktonic young. Tiny gelatinous eggs float free in the water column. The milky white clouds signal it is time to harvest the post productive adults. The annual harvest is cause for a massive week long celebration and festival feast. Sufficient quantities are flash frozen by off world exporters and shipped across the sector and sold as a seafood delicacy.

Hirida has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
