The High Liner class Bulk Freighter is a TL–12 mercantile Bulk Freighter.

Description

The High Liner class is a large Transport ship found operating within the Distant Fringe region. It is classified as a Bulk Cargo Carrier and is constructed as a long-range design. The dispersed structure hull is inexpensive but the configuration renders the vessel incapable of independent refueling operations.

Basic Ship Characteristics

The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten craft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) where necessary.

The hull is unstreamlined and has no capability to perform atmospheric operations. Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls. There are multiple airlocks located around the vessel. The vessel does not have landing gear.
2.	Crew	Total Crew Complement: x38 x11 Command, x6 Engineering, x6 Gunnery, x10 Service, and x5 Security Personnel. Accommodations There are x25 Staterooms. x23 Staterooms are given over to crew quarters. The command crew have individual cabins: all other quarters are double occupancy. x2 Staterooms are available to paying passengers. The vessel does not offer steward service. There are x2 Low Berths, primarily used for medical emergencies. Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems. There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency. There are multiple Emergency Lockers.
3.	Performance	The vessel mounts a DeVoss-type Jump-2 drive, a Maneuver-1 drive, and a Power Plant-2, giving performance of Jump-2, 1-G acceleration, and producing 100 Energy Points. The ship has an agility rating of 1. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for two Jump-2s and gives the power plant 6 weeks duration. The engineering section has a main control room. Ladders, gantries and platforms give access to the machinery. The jump drive creates a jump bubble around the vessel. The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
4.	Electronics	Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/6 Computer: the vessel does not have a backup computer. There are multiple workstations and control points throughout the vessel. The vessel is fitted with communications equipment and a standard sensor array. It is fitted with backup commo and sensor systems. It has a transponder unit that can be deactivated on command.
5.	Hardpoints	x50 hardpoints. The listed battery groupings are considered standard for the class. Alternative battery groupings may be designated for specific routes.
6.	Armament	The High Liner is unarmed.
7.	Defenses	The hull is unarmored. x50 triple Sandcaster turrets, grouped into five batteries each of 10 linked turrets The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.
8.	Craft	The vessel carries no subcraft. The Bulk Freighter has the capacity to carry up to 2,000 dTons of smaller vessels. There are large numbers of berthing points located along the vessels central spine, each connected to a crew access hatch.
9.	Fuel Treatment	The vessel has internal fuel tankage of 2,150 dTon. The hull is not fitted with fuel scoops. The vessel is not equipped with fuel purification equipment.
10.	Cost	The basic cost of the vessel is MCr2,030.050. Architects Fee: MCr2.031 If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price per unit to MCr1,624.040.
11.	Construction Time	112 weeks (28 months) as standard. Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12.	Comments	Standard cargo capacity amounts to 42 dTons of internal (protected) volume. The internal cargo hold can be sealed and has independent life support and environmental systems. Sections of the internal hold may be isolated if desired and can be provided with specialized environmental conditions, typically refrigeration. The vessel may also externally mount up to 2,000 dTons of goods and freight secured along the vessels central spine: this cargo is carried in vacuum conditions and must be protected accordingly.

History & Background

The design was commissioned for the Bright Conclave, in Halcyon Sector, and was originally conceived as a military ship transporter capable of carrying a pair of 1,000 dTon Rysos class Battle Barges. This carrying capacity can be dynamically reconverted to suit mission needs and parameters using modular hull pods that marry into the vessels spine:

The ship can serve as a research lab. Such vessels can support university or corporate field research. Passenger modules, containing large numbers of Staterooms or Low Berths, may be carried.

The design is representative and a large number of variants exist (most notably the almost identical Sagacity class Bulk Freighter), Typically, variants of the design have different weapons systems, onboard electronics, and a different internal layout. There are x20 High Liners currently in service.

Overburden

The High Liner class is capable of carrying "overburden" cargos: a payload of up to 7,000 dTons. The major limiting factor on overburdening a vessel is the capability of the ship's DeVoss Jump Drive. If the total displacement tonnage of the vessel, including its overburden cargo, is dTons or more, the volume prevents the drive making a jump-1 transition. The overburden payload increases the ship's displacement tonnage – to an upper limit of 10,000 dTons – but any degree of overburdening reduces its performance to jump-1 and 0.5G acceleration. The payload must be fully contained within the jump bubble. The practice of overburdening a ship places extreme stresses and strains on the internal equipment and dramatically increases the chances of a catastrophic failure.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities

A number of companies manufacture ships equivalent to the High Liner class. They vary in hull shape and internal layout but all share the same basic design and all have very similar capabilities and performance characteristics.
