Starships are designed with the Classic Traveller format, using High Guard Shipyard v1.13 written by Andrea Vallance. |
The Harmal class Missile Cruiser is a warship.
- It is a military ship and a Missile Cruiser.
Description (Specifications)
Built for the Maujen Defense Bureau, this class of missile cruiser was designed to overwhelm enemy vessels in a massive barrage of nuclear ordinance, in an attempt to saturate the target's point defense capabilities. The class is not particularly well suited to sustained, nor independent operations. She would prefer to attack en masse, as part of a larger squadron and then fade away. The problem is that additional copies of this design have yet to be commissioned. So the single cruiser of this class is forced to act as a flagship and fleet control vessel. A role for which it was not intended.

Basic Ship Characteristics
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten craft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) where necessary. [1]

History & Background (Dossier)
In the defense of Maujen (world), this craft has traditionally worked in a short range stand off mode. It executes a Jump-1 into the target area, hopefully with the element of surprise, proceeds to lay waste to any targets of opportunity and then jumps 1 back to the staging area. This approach has required the use of micro jumps within the same system to achieve these objectives, in the past. The streamlined hull is armored, and fitted with scoops and fuel refineries to permit wilderness ocean refueling. The small marine platoon allows the insertion of commando operatives, in a special forces' role. This platoon is tasked to avoid direct action against enemy massed troops. The four air rafts can support and recover the 19 man advanced element. The balance crew the close support grav vehicles. The single squadron of light fighters has fulfilled two roles. They are used to screen the cruiser against enemy missile fire, and enemy fighter strikes. They can also fly close support and surface strike missions for the marine force commandos. The weakness over the course of its service career is the low acceleration and lack of evasive agility. Plans to fit drop tanks are under review at the current meeting of the naval war college.
