Hammond is a poor, low-population hellworld with a population less than 10,000 sophonts struggling to survive in an inhospitable environment.

  • Hellworlds often offer daily, and sometimes even hourly, life-threatening situations to their inhabitants. Survivors often form intense survival skills and tend to be grim realists.
  • It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the Nabile Subsector of Bourne Sector.

System Data

Carr-Hammond System

The primary is Carr, an ordinary red main sequence star. It has a luminosity of 0.04 Sols, a mass of 0.489 Sols, and a diameter of 764,000 km. (I-I) a standard atmosphere radworld, (I-II) a thin atmosphere radworld, and (I-III) Hammond, designated the mainworld, have a shared orbit within the habitable zone. (II-I) a sparse stony planetoid belt, (II-II) a small gas giant, (III) a ringed large gas giant, (IV) an exotic atmosphere bigworld, and (V) a small ice giant form the outer system. Many of the worlds retain satellites.

Mainworld Data

(I-III) Hammond

(I-III) Hammond is designated the mainworld. It orbits Carr at a mean distance of 0.25 AU (37.4 million km), within the habitable zone. It has an orbital period of 65 days 7 hours: it is tidally locked to Carr. The axial tilt is 4 degrees. Hammond has a diameter of 7,696 km, a density of 4.63 g/cm³, and a surface gravity of 0.50 G. Tidal stresses generated by the gravitational pull of Carr cause occasional geological activity. Its atmosphere is rated as Thin, Tainted, with a mean surface pressure of 0.61 bar and a composition of 84% nitrogen (N2), 15% oxygen (O2), and 1% argon (Ar), water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), neon (Ne) and other trace gases. The taint is caused by the low percentage of atmospheric oxygen and the relatively high levels of background radiation: emission rates exceed 3 rads per hour. Approximately 10% of the surface is covered in lakes and seas of liquid water: average tidal ranges exceed 0.25m. Mean surface temperature: 12°C. The climate is rated as Temperate-Cool and is static, with no seasonal changes during the local year. The atmosphere is slow and moderate weather systems driven by the star work across the globe.

Mainworld Geography and Topography

Total surface area: 186 million km², Land surface area: 167 million km², Water surface area: 19 million km².

  • Hammond is a Twilight Zone World.
  • The world experiences libration, which causes the star to move in the sky and periodically rise and fall above the horizon in the twilight region.

Native Lifeforms

Carr-Hammond System

The temperate hospitable world lying in orbital position (I-I) (within the habitable zone) has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that thrive in the harsh conditions. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

The temperate hospitable world lying in orbital position (I-II) (within the habitable zone) has primitive native life, consisting entirely of microscopic cyanobacteria-parallels that exist in any location where they can find even a minimal trace of shelter and moisture. Their metabolic functions maintain the process of atmospheric renewal.

Hammond, the mainworld, has extensive native life, consisting of microscopic organisms, stromatolite-parallels and primitive flora that can be found in almost every ecological niche. Their metabolic functions drive the process of atmospheric renewal.

No other world in the system is known to have native life.

History & Background (Dossier)

World starport

Hammond has a Class E Starport, a frontier quality installation with few expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of a downport.

World technology level

Hammond possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World government

Hammond is governed by a Corporate Polity with a single corporation with a typical corporate structure as a government. A company town, or world. The typical corporate run world usually has a single purpose. Examples include mining, agriculture, or other kinds of resource extraction. But rather than a simple base of operations, there are facilities for housing workers and their families including hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure. How, or if, the children of the workers are incorporated into the workforce varies with companies. The corporation running the world may be a subsidiary of a larger interstellar corporation.
