The Graytch of Liigash (Gushemege 2815) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a non-humanoid appearance and technologically sophisticated sophonts.
- They are correctly called the Ga-ray-cha; "Graytch" is a human corruption.
Physical sophontology[edit]
The arboreal Graytch have six legs. Their two arms are quite short and weak, but the hands are very flexible and delicate. Graytch bones are made of crystalline silicon, and their muscle fibers, working in both directions, give them both great dexterity and great range of motion. Though slower than humans on flat surfaces, Graytch are supreme in 3-D environments, often moving through trees faster than human runners on the ground.
Graytch mass from 75 - 125 kilograms, stand some 1.5 - 1.75 meters from ground to head, and extend about 2 - 2.25 meters from snout to rump.
Senses[edit]
Graytch ingest food through a horizontal mouth beneath their chin. Sensory glands along the inside of the mouth allow Graytch to taste and smell, but these functions are strictly optional. Graytch ears are mounted on the side of the neck.
Reproduction[edit]
There are three sexes; male, female and neuter, born in a ratio 3-3-1. Two or three times in its life, a male or female Graytch may become absent-minded and mistake-prone as they enter a thirteen-month parenting phase, but their culture has evolved to deal with these occasional sabbaticals.
Graytch grow up quickly, reaching physical maturity a mere seven months after birth, and the age of majority within two years.
The biological urge to form a family is strong during the breeding phase, but as soon as the children have passed out of the family to take their place as adults, the mother and father enter another biochemical shift. The urge for companionship is quickly replaced by feelings of revulsion. The small family disintegrates and the individuals move back into society, most likely to never contact each other again.
Cultural sophontology[edit]
Almost all Graytch follow the non-violent teachings of Say-ta-chu, but each of the several sects looks down upon the others. Graytch are intensely curious about aliens, and despite their firm religious rivalries, are adaptive and tolerant in their dealings with other races and cultures, even suffering when they are alone.
As families are temporary affairs, business affiliations are the closest relationships Graytch have to Human family bonds. Management hierarchies can resemble blood ties, from a Human point of view. Senior managers hold the status of "family elders", and their employees grant them the appropriate respect and attention. These close bonds make Graytch business ventures slightly more organized and efficient than those of most Human cultures, if only because employee turnover is much less prevalent.
