Imperial High / Landed Nobility

Gravista, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estates of two members of the Imperial Nobility, who are charged with overseeing the world.

World Starport

Gravista has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Technology Level

Gravista possesses a Technology Level of TL–4.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Telephone and telegraphs, widespread printing.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early electricity, hydrocarbon internal combustion.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
  • An enterprising Sylean administrator had an odd idea. Recently retired from intelligence services in the imperial navy, he was frustrated by the local technology level. He needed at least a TL–5 model 1 computer to help run the starport, so he came up with a solution. The Vargr and Vilani living here would be converted and trained to suit his needs and achieve his vision. Once it became obvious that the imperial bureaucracy wasn't going to fulfill his requisition for advanced systems, and the Scout Base was unwilling or unable to help, he secured approval from the imperial nobles charged with administrating the planet for the benefit of the emperor.
  • He had noticed the pyramids and other massive monolithic structures that this ancient civilization had constructed on their dry world, he realized that these were people with vision and determination. He applied his advanced understanding of high technology and computer architecture to building an organic operating system. He used the world governments bureaucracies' clerical and accounting traditions and he re-imagined them. He set about designing a huge organic computer with living creatures as the operational components. Each employee has a function, a decision tree and a set of commands for data processing. There is error checking and redundancy. Paper cards of hand written data flow from office cubical to the next in the relay.
  • Massive optical telescopes track orbiting ships who are signaled using heliographs and a simple common code of flashes of light. Instructions and orbital data is relayed by messengers to the processors who manually perform all the advanced mathematical calculations in real time to plot and track ships. They relay coordinates and handle traffic control. Ships must use their visual light frequency laser coms or running lights to signal back. Orbits and navigational protocols are tightly regulated to speed things up and increase predictability. Recalculating always slows things down. Ships must be dealt with one at a time and must wait their turn to get landing clearance. The radio channels are silent and no EMS signals are evident coming from the world, aside from the flashes from the heliograph stations which ring the equator at intervals to cover horizon limits and the cycles of rising and setting sunlight. There are no orbital navigational aids and no traffic control satellites to interrogate. Fleets of dirigibles, relay from each equatorial station. They bring supplies and swap out crews. Telegraph and telephone cables criss cross continents and oceans, to and from each nation's cities.

World Government

Gravista has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

World Demographics

Bwap tourists flock here to see the synchronicity of the system and the are thrilled by the order and pattern of the place, like a large hive with a focus and a purpose. Some volunteer to become operations components for a time, they love it and pay well for the privilege.

World Culture

The local citizens are noted for their abilities to carry out rote memorization tasks and repetitive functions for long periods of time. They don't need to understand why, or what is all means, they just faithfully carry out their assigned functions, confident that the larger global vision is necessary. The loyal worker bee mentality is greatly admired and a particular point of pride. The concept that each citizen must do their part, no matter how small to keep the system running is ingrained from childhood. The orderly nature of the global society is in sharp contrast to the different cultures, and different species which over the planet's history have fought devastating wars.

Urbanization

  • The cities are alive with "technology" services and convenience gadgets. You need to make a call, an operator will hand connect your call. Need a message sent, a courier rides out immediately and hand deliver hand written "secure" responses on paper in ink. Sealed in an envelop and fresh from the telegraph office, you get all the same functions, except everything moves at the speed of humans and vargrs. Some advanced nodes have pools of clerk typists to manage large batch data output. They call others, dictate orders and the receivers type up the orders for local dissemination. Natives are proud to be so progressive and are offended if it is suggested that their methods are some how inferior to technologies available other places. Their mechanics take pride in being able to fabricate replacement ship parts at the starport. Show them the part, they take some caliber measurements and bring you a copy back, accurate to the 0.1 mm. This will be a couple of days latter of course, but at a very reasonable cost. It will be cast or molded from local steel or aluminum. They are talented with copper wiring but fiber optics are beyond them. There are limits to what hand blown glass can do. In some cases these parts may not be up to the tolerances and rigors of fusion powered starships, and if this is rudely pointed out, a shrug is the usual response.
