Explosive material is a reactive substance that contains a great amount of potential energy. The release of this energy is frequently uncontrolled, producing an explosion and potentially causing a great deal of damage. Applied with correct skills, this energy can be put to good use in the construction and mining industries. It also works quite well in making weapons.
Collected here are a number of well-known explosive substances and devices utilizing explosives as their main working elements.

Breaching Charges are shaped charges of plastic explosive designed to blow man sized holes in walls. The charge is the size of a thick notebook; it has a self-adhesive panel on one side and an adjustable chemical time fuse on the other.
To operate, the user peels the sheet of protective plastic film from the adhesive panel, then breaks the pre-scored fuse strip at the desired time delay (5 to 60 seconds in 5 second increments), pulls the primer, and dives for cover. An activated chemical fuse cannot be turned off, though a demolitions expert might be able to remove the fuse without detonation. Charges are insensitive to shock or bullets, and will only burn, not explode in fire.
A charge will blow a passable hole in most conventionally constructed walls. Multiple charges may be used to make larger openings; four, correctly spread out, will make a hole big enough to drive through. To blast through bank vaults or ship's bulkheads requires multiple attacks.
Charges do not make very good antipersonnel weapons but they can be used as "limpet mines" against vehicles or soldiers in battle dress. Breaching charges require only basic familiarization to use though a skilled user will get better effects.
Fire departments and rescue units often have a few breaching charges, used to free people trapped in burning or collapsed buildings. Charges made for such "civilian" use are striped dazzle yellow and black, and usually have a fixed 60 second delay.

A chemical explosive in the form of a stiff putty, C-8 requires a blasting charge to detonate. It is are otherwise inert and won't detonate with shock or fire. Though it flammable igniting it won't detonate the charge.

Detonating cord (also called detonation cord, detacord, det. cord, detcord, primer cord, Primercord, or sun cord) is a thin, flexible plastic tube filled with explosive. Any common length of detonation cord appears to explode instantaneously. It is a high-speed fuse which explodes, rather than burns, and is suitable for detonating high explosives. While it looks like nylon cord, the core is a compressed powdered explosive and it is initiated by the use of a blasting cap. Detonating cord can be used as a precision cutting charge to remove cables, pipes, wiring, fiber optics, and other utility bundles by placing one or more complete wraps around the target.

A detonator, frequently a blasting cap, is a device used to trigger an explosive device. Detonators can be chemically, mechanically, or electrically initiated, the latter two being the most common. The need for detonators such as blasting caps came from the development of safer explosives. Most explosives are formulated to make them stable and safe to handle so they will not explode if accidentally dropped, mishandled, or exposed to fire. However, they are difficult to detonate intentionally and require a small initiating explosion. This is provided by a detonator.

Dynamite is one of the most common explosives in use. It is used by civil engineers for demolitions, it is relatively easy to manufacture. It has also found military uses. Dynamite is sold in cases of 100 quarter-kilo sticks.

Dyrocellus Cloth is a development of nitrocellulose and has the texture and feel of cotton cloth with the an explosive power equal to a similar amount of nitrocellulose.
The material can be exploded by detonator or exposure to 750°F heat. Dyrocellus cloth can be made into any article of clothing but is usually made into easily removed fashion accessories (hats, scarves, sashes, et.al.). The material is contraband in the Trelyn Domain, Die Weltbund, and Intercourse/Delta.

Linear Burning Rope is an explosive device. Each rope is packaged in 8-meter long coils, with a rope diameter of 3cm; within the vacuum-sealed plastic packs they are further wrapped in a cellophane-like red and yellow-striped covering, which peels off to reveal a bright yellow putty-like substance, akin to plastic explosives. Each package also contains two piezo-electric initiator plugs.
After the roll is removed from the outer packaging, the inner cellophane wrapping must be removed. The putty-like material of the rope is malleable with ease, even in cold temperatures (operating temperature range: 100°K to 285°K). The rope should be molded to the edge of the surface to be burned through and tamped to provide as equilateral a triangular cross-section as possible. Each rope is powerful enough to burn through a standard thickness ship hull.
Two initiators are supplied for times when stress is high: It is not uncommon for an initiator to go 'walkies' and having a second initiator to hand is a measure of insurance against stress-induced forgetfulness. One initiator is sufficient to ignite an entire length of Linear Burning Rope; the initiator is pushed into a convenient place in the rope, much like a plastic explosive detonator plug might be. The red and yellow striped tab is peeled off, to reveal a bright red and yellow pull ring. the ring connects to 1mm thick by 30cm long cable leading to a wind-up detonator within the body of the initiator, which then charges a high-charge capacitor, which on reaching full capacity, discharges after five seconds into the rope, which then ignites.
The rope burns extremely brightly (in a similar way to magnesium) and with extremely high temperature within the material being burned through; surrounding temperatures are high, but not excessively so. It takes about thirty seconds for a standard section of hull metal to be burned through, and the edges of the metal will be exceedingly hot to the touch for about half an hour after burning.
In much the same way as a linear shaped charge works explosively, the Linear Burning Rope works comparatively slowly and non-explosively for use in confined spaces.
The manufacturer of the rope recommends in the literature that an insulating blanket of some kind be affixed to affected surfaces to prevent burn injuries after penetration (they recommend a product they manufacture, as it happens).

Linear Shaped Charge (LSC) is a v-shaped armoured polymer strip packed with blasting putty. When detonated whilst in contact with a solid object, LSC will cut cleanly through the object, following the principles of the shaped charge theory. LSC is useful for cutting through substances such as plasteel, superdense, and the like. LSC will cut through 50mm of superdense, 750mm of resincrete, 200mm of plate steel, or 150mm of plasteel. It requires detonators and a trigger.

Pamex-20 is an explosive compound with extensive industrial and military uses. The compound consists of a stable explosive which is formed as a thick paste and extruded into pellets of varied length depending upon the intended use. Pamex is extruded in cylinders 15mm in diameter by 20mm, hence the designator Pamex-20. It is in common use in the Spinward Marches as the explosive component of the Standard Missile.

Plastic explosive can be molded to any desired shape and will adhere to nearly any surface. It does not explode when burned and can only be detonated by another explosion usually provided by a blasting cap. Proper use of the explosive requires the correct skills.

Siderote-7 is a paper-like processed fibers of the pods of Sider's Milkweed native to Akira desert of Lilith (The Beyond 0405). The plant is known for its unique method of reproduction. The plant only blooms during infrequent rains during which it blooms, forms seed pods and explodes once the temperature reaches 50°C. Usually this pop is not more than an annoyance, though being too close can cause unpleasant burns.
Siderote-7 are the processed seed pods, often made into a variety of paper products such as writing paper, card, cigarette papers, and the like. The detonation level of Siderote-7 is 110°C. The explosive effect of ignition is on par with most high explosives.

TDX is a specialized explosive which functions perpendicular to force of gravity. When detonated, the major force is directed in the horizontal plane. As a result, it is extremely efficient in its blast effects.
Examples of its use are felling of trees, the severance of trestle, bridge, or other supports, the creation of directional anti-personnel mines, and situations where a directed explosion is essential.
Commonly TDX is shipped in 2.5kg bricks, a standard for explosive charges.

Thermeld comes in 15cm long x 5cm wide x 3 cm deep strips of mildly flexible bright pink putty-like material, wrapped in yellow and black striped cellophane-like material, with a pull-strip on the base to expose a mildly adhesive base. Each strip is further wrapped in a vacuum-sealed transparent wrapping that also contains two piezo-electric initiator plugs.
After removing the strip from the outer packaging, and securing the initiators in a safe place, the bottom peel-off strip is removed, and the strip affixed to the joining surfaces to be welded together.

Thermeld Strips operate in much the same way that Linear burning ropes do, but welding surfaces together in an emergency, rather than cutting them. Thermeld is not a substitute for conventional welding equipment but is a handy emergency substitute.
The rope burns extremely brightly (in a similar way to magnesium) and with extremely high temperature within the material being burned through; surrounding temperatures are high, but not excessively so. It takes about ten seconds for a weld to be conducted, and the welded surfaces will be exceedingly hot to the touch for about half an hour after burning.

A small coin sized charge of Thermite, designed to open locks by burning them into uselessness. Thin enough to slide between a door and the jam to cut the locking bolt, or simply attached to the lock itself. Ignition is a simple press of a button on the side, and equipped with a safety to prevent accidental discharge. Counts as an explosive device and restricted or banned on most worlds.
