The Steam Car is a type of Ground Car.
Description / Specifications[edit]
A small low tech vehicle designed for the civilian market.
Hull / Suspension[edit]
A boxy hull constructed from steel, brass and wood.
- Length: 3.4m, Width: 1.4m, Height: 1.5m.
- Overall volume: approximately 7.2m³ (0.6 dTons).
- Unloaded Weight: 650 kg.
The overall volume measures the vehicles maximum dimensions and includes road clearance. The enclosed volume of the contoured hull is substantially lower.
The vehicle is fitted with a wheeled suspension system mounted on axles.
- The vehicle performs well on metalled surfaces. It has limited off-road capability.
Power / Transmission[edit]
A small but efficient high pressure boiler, generating steam by burning liquid fuel to heat water. The steam powers pistons connected to the drive wheels. The car carries a reserve of water in an internal tank and a supply of liquid fuel within a protected tank. Cold-starting the car can take tens of minutes and requires a few liters of water to be boiled until operating pressure is reached.
Performance[edit]
- Cruise Speed: 40 kph, Top Speed: 55 km. Off-road Speed: less than 20 kph.
- Range: 150 km at Cruise Speed, 100 km at Top Speed.
Crew / Passengers[edit]
The crew compartment consists of an open centrally located cockpit fitted with a clear front window and containing two front seats and two rear seats. A fixed fabric roof provides basic environmental protection (the hull is weatherproof but is not sealed). The driver's position is fitted with basic mechanical controls. Gauges provide data such as internal pressure and forward velocity.
A small luggage trunk is located at the rear of the vehicle.
- Cargo Storage: 0.2m³.
- Maximum Load: 310 kg (including passengers) before performance is dramatically impaired.
Equipment[edit]
Headlights and running lights.
History / Background[edit]
An early self-propelled road vehicle designed to transport passengers. Although the vehicle is manufactured at relatively low tech levels and uses basic materials the design has been perfected over millennia and all of the engineering aspects are well-known and thoroughly understood. The steam car is relatively efficient and reliable for its era. If a breakdown does occur it can generally be repaired with simple tools and brute force.
