The Runabout is a smallcraft.
- It is a Civilian Ship and an Auxiliary.
- Please also see: Ships of the Distant Fringe.
Description (Specifications)
This is a generic class of smallcraft.
The Runabout is a low-tech vessel designed to ferry cargo and passengers between locations. Similar designs have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.
- The vessel is a TL-7 design.

Basic Ship Characteristics
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten craft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) when necessary. [1]
Basic Ship Characteristics [2] | ||
---|---|---|
No. | Category | Remarks |
1. | Tonnage | The Runabout is constructed using a 50 dTon hull built in a generally cone-shaped configuration. The hull is fully streamlined and has airfoil surfaces, giving improved atmospheric performance.
|
2. | Crew | Total Crew Complement: 1
Accommodations There are 4 small staterooms. One typically serves as an office, galley or medical bay as necessary and contains a small fresher, while the remaining three are available to paying passengers. All are set up for zero-gee activity. There are x8 passenger acceleration couches. The ship does not have grav plates or inertial compensators. The vessel has full life support and environmental systems.
|
3. | Performance | The vessel mounts an extremely efficient reaction-based Maneuver-2 drive and a Fission Power Plant-2, giving performance of 2-G acceleration and producing 1 Energy Point. The ship has an agility rating of 2. The internal fuel supply provides reaction mass for the Maneuver drive and is considered sufficient to support approximately 3 weeks of operations.
|
4. | Electronics | The cockpit contains x2 acceleration couches and control equipment. The vessel is fitted with a Model/1 computer: no backup computer is installed.
|
5. | Hardpoints | x1 hardpoint. |
6. | Armament | The Runabout is generally unarmed. |
7. | Defenses | The hull is unarmored.
|
8. | Craft | The vessel carries no subcraft. |
9. | Fuel Treatment | The vessel has an internal fuel tank containing 1 dTon of reaction mass for the Drives.
|
10. | Cost | The basic cost of the vessel is MCr22.200.
|
11. | Construction Time | 24 weeks (5.5 months) as standard.
|
12. | Comments | Cargo capacity amounts to 28 dTons. |
History & Background (Dossier)
The Runabout is a low-tech design used for a variety of roles. The design is representative and a large number of variants exist, particularly with regard to the allotted weapons systems, onboard electronics, and the fit out of internal spaces.
Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities
Different examples of the design are known by many different names but all have very similar performance characteristics and capabilities.
