Description / Specifications
A generic class of small warship, the Light Corvette is an escort vessel frequently encountered along Star Lanes within the Distant Fringe region. It is classified as a Close Escort and is constructed as a conventional design. Similar designs have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.
- The vessel is a TL 11 design.
Hull
The Light Corvette is constructed using a 1000 dTon hull built in a generally vertical wedge-shaped configuration. The hull is fully streamlined, plated, and structurally reinforced, with an armor rating of 8: the ship is equipped with fuel scoops.
- Individual sections of the ship are divided by bulkhead walls. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency.
- The hull includes internal grav plates and inertial compensators. All accessible sections of the hull have life support.
Engineering
The vessel mounts a DeVoss-type jump-2 drive, a maneuver-4 drive, and a power plant 4, giving performance of jump-2 and 4G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of 2 and an emergency agility of 4. There is fuel tankage of 240 dTons, sufficient for one jump-2 and giving the power plant four weeks duration. The craft is fitted with a fuel purification plant.
- The engineering section has a main control room.
- The jump drive utilises a lanthanum hull grid.
- The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
Main Section
Adjacent to the bridge is a computer model/3: the vessel carries an additional backup computer model/3. There are 30 staterooms and 6 low berths, primarily used for emergency medical purposes. Double occupancy accommodations are required for all except the command crew. One stateroom is set aside as a dedicated medical bay. Fourteen staterooms are available to ship's troops (who travel double occupancy), officers (who travel single occupancy) or important passengers. Cargo capacity amounts to 10 dTons.
- The vessel is fitted with communications equipment, an advanced sensor array, full ECM, and an avionics suite.
Crew
The Light Corvette requires 21 crew: 9x command, 3x engineering, 6x gunnery, 2x service, and 1x Flight. The vessel carries 27 marines (26 troopers and an officer).
Weapons
The ship is fitted with 10 turrets. These are grouped into:
- two beam laser batteries, each consisting of 2 linked triple turrets
- three missile batteries, each consisting of 2 linked triple turrets
Subcraft
The ship carries a 40 dTon Ship’s Boat in a dedicated hanger.
Cost
The basic cost of the vessel, complete with a Ship’s Boat, is MCr1008.709.
- Both craft are standard designs. Detailed architectural plans are widely available and no design fee is chargeable.
- If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price per unit to MCr806.968.
History / Background
The design is representative and a large number of variants exist, particularly with regard to the allotted weapons systems, onboard electronics, and the fit out of internal spaces.
The class are nicknamed "axeheads" due to their upright wedge-shaped configuration.
