The High Speed Locomotive is a Railroad Vehicle. It requires a railroad network of the correct gauge to operate.

Description / Specifications

A fast railroad locomotive designed to tow passenger trains.

Hull / Suspension

An enclosed box-shaped hull constructed from steel and plastic.

  • Length: 24.9m, Width: 3.1m, Height: 3.8m.
  • Overall Volume: approximately 294m³ (21 dTons).
  • Unloaded Weight: 65,500 kg.

The overall volume measures the vehicles maximum dimensions and includes track clearance. The enclosed volume of the hull is lower.

The High Speed Locomotive is fitted with wheels mounted in powered trucks, helping to distribute its weight and enabling it to traverse curves in the track. The trucks and their mountings are engineered to allow extremely high speed travel.

  • The vehicle is designed to operate on railroad networks. The gauge (the distance between the inner faces of the two rails) for railroad networks within the Distant Fringe is generally 1.5m and most examples of the High Speed Locomotive are built to match that standard.

Power / Transmission

The power plant consists of a series of storage batteries and large electric motors, drawing power from an overhead pantograph or an electrified "third rail". The power plant yields a high top speed.

Performance

  • Cruise Speed: 220 kph, Top Speed: 280 kph. Performance is similar in forward and reverse.
  • Range: unlimited.

The locomotive tows a train of High Speed Carriages. Locomotives and carriages have an automatic coupling system that includes data, power and environmental linkages.

  • Maximum Gross Towing Weight: approximately 475,000 kg (equivalent to eight fully laden High Speed Carriages). Greater loads may be moved but this places stresses on the locomotive that may cause a catastrophic loss of control.
  • Two locomotives normally work together in order to move larger trains.

Passengers / Cargo

The body of the locomotive consists of an enclosed machinery section and a spacious cabin towards the front of the hull containing two crew positions. The driver's position is equipped with advanced controls and a console that provides information such as component status and forward velocity. The vehicle has full environmental protection (the hull is sealed) and is fitted with full climate control. A fresher and a small galley are located behind the crew cabin. A narrow internal walkway runs the length of the locomotive and gives the crew access to the towed carriages.

  • Internal Cargo Storage: 6m³ (partly given over to a tool and safety equipment locker).
  • Maximum Load: restricted by volume only.

Equipment

Running lights. Global communications and data access.

History / Background

A locomotive designed to move passenger trains along railroad networks. Vehicles of this type usually have a distinctive livery.

Trains are generally assembled with two High Speed Locomotives. A typical combination is fourteen High Speed Carriages with a High Speed Locomotive at either end.
