The Heavy Freight Locomotive is a Railroad Vehicle. It requires a railroad network of the correct gauge to operate.

Description / Specifications

A powerful diesel-electric locomotive used for a variety of work. It can move very heavy loads.

Hull / Suspension

A box-shaped hull constructed primarily from steel.

  • Length: 24.2m (cabin length 3.4m), Width: 2.9m, Height: 3.9m.
  • Overall Volume: approximately 274m³ (19.5 dTons).
  • Unloaded Weight: 152,500 kg.
Note that the overall volume measures the vehicles maximum dimensions and includes track clearance. The enclosed volume of the contoured hull is significantly lower.

The vehicle is fitted with wheels set onto a series of powered trucks.

  • The vehicle is designed to operate on rail networks. The gauge (the distance between the inner faces of the two rails) for railroad networks within the Distant Fringe is generally 1.5m and most examples of the locomotive are built to match that standard.

Power / Transmission

A large power plant using hydrocarbon fuel to drive an electric motor. The motor produces a huge amount of torque but yields a relatively low top speed. The fuel is contained within protected internal tanks.

Performance

  • Cruise Speed: 80 kph, Top Speed: 120 kph. Performance is similar in forward and reverse.
  • Range: 2300 km at Cruise Speed, 1700 km at Top Speed.

The locomotive tows a train of wagons or other similar loads. Locomotives and wagons have an automatic coupling system. The linkage also includes pressure hoses that are connected to the towed wagons and operate their brakes.

  • Maximum Gross Towing Weight: approximately 3.15 million kg (equivalent to twelve fully laden Hopper Wagons). Greater loads may be moved but this places stresses on the locomotive that may cause a catastrophic loss of control.
  • Two or more locomotives may work together in order to move larger trains.

Crew / Cargo

An enclosed cabin towards the front of the hull contains two crew positions. The driver's position is equipped with mechanical controls and a console that provides information such as fuel levels and forward velocity. A narrow internal walkway runs the length of the locomotive and gives the crew access to the towed wagons. Basic environment (the hull is weatherproof but is not sealed): a tiny fresher and galley are provided.

  • Internal Cargo Storage: 5m³ (partly given over to a large tool and equipment locker).
  • Maximum Load: restricted by volume only.

Equipment

Headlights and running lights, and a horn. Locomotives may be fitted with animal fenders.

History / Background

A railroad locomotive designed for logistical operations. Such locomotives move long trains of wagons laden with thousands of tons of materials and commodities. Locomotives of this type often bear a distinctive livery.
