The Cargo Barge is a mercantile spacecraft.

Description (Specifications)

This is a generic class of civilian vessel.

The Cargo Barge is a low-tech vessel designed to ferry cargo and passengers between locations. It is classified as a Bulk Cargo Carrier. Similar designs have been in use from the time the Distant Fringe was first settled.

  • The vessel is a TL-7 design.

Basic Ship Characteristics

Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten craft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) when necessary. [1]

Basic Ship Characteristics [2]
No. Category Remarks
1. Tonnage The Cargo Barge is constructed using a 3,000 dTon hull built in a generally cone-shaped configuration. The hull is fully streamlined and has airfoil surfaces, giving acceptable atmospheric performance.
2. Crew Total Crew Complement: 28
  • 9x command, 4x engineering, 4x gunners, 9x service, and 2x passenger stewards.

Accommodations

There are 34 staterooms.

  • 19 Staterooms are given over to crew quarters. The command crew have individual cabins: all other crew quarters are double occupancy.
  • 15 Staterooms are available to passengers.

There are 40 Low Berths.

The ship does not have grav plates or inertial compensators: the interior of the ship is set up for zero-gee activity. The vessel has full life support and environmental systems.

  • There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Sections of the ship can be isolated in the event of an emergency.
  • There are multiple small emergency lockers.
3. Performance The vessel mounts an extremely efficient reaction-based Maneuver-2 drive and a Fission Power Plant-2, giving performance of 2-G acceleration and producing 60 Energy Points. The ship has an agility rating of 2. The internal fuel supply provides reaction mass for the Maneuver drive and is considered sufficient to support approximately 4 weeks of operations.
  • The Power Plant fuel consists of a heavily shielded rods of fissionable material.
  • The engineering section has a main control room.
    • Ladders, gantries and platforms give access to the machinery.
4. Electronics Adjacent to the bridge is a Model/2 computer: the vessel has a backup Model/2 computer.
5. Hardpoints x30 hardpoints.
6. Armament The Cargo Barge is unarmed.
7. Defenses The hull is unarmored.
  • x30 triple Sandcaster turrets, grouped into three batteries each of 10 linked turrets
  • The vessel is not fitted with screens or other passive defensive systems.
8. Craft The vessel carries no subcraft.
9. Fuel Treatment The vessel has an internal fuel tank containing 60 dTons of reaction mass for the Drives.
  • The hull is fitted with intrinsic fuel scoops. These are routed into the cargo hold, allowing the vessel to act as a Tanker if required.
  • The vessel is not equipped with fuel purification equipment.
  • The ship carries a collapsible fuel tank with a capacity of 2,300 dTons and a stowed volume of 115 dTons.
10. Cost The basic cost of the vessel is MCr1,264.700.
  • The ship is a standard design. Detailed architectural plans are widely available and no design fee is chargeable.
  • If multiple examples of the design are ordered all of the ships in the production run qualify for a 20% discount, which reduces the price of each unit to MCr1,011.760.
11. Construction Time 132 weeks (33 months) as standard.
  • Build times can be reduced by mass production and the efficiencies such processes generate, by increased financing, and by allotting additional yard resources and facilities to the construction contract.
12. Comments Cargo capacity amounts to 2,300 dTons.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Cargo Barge is a low-tech design used for a variety of roles. The design is representative and a large number of variants exist, particularly with regard to the allotted weapons systems, onboard electronics, and the fit out of internal spaces.

Class Naming Practice/s & Peculiarities

Different examples of the design are known by many different names but all have very similar performance characteristics and capabilities.
