Freshers serve the cleaning and hygienic needs of sophont species aboard spacegoing vessels or even planetary vehicles.

  • They are known by a wide variety of terms including heads, toilets, crappers, rest rooms, loos, dunnies, daraagu, and many that are not fit to print as Library Data.
  • It is a kind of Ship Equipment.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

Interior fittings: Deck plans typically show various furnishings and fittings which appear within the ship.[1] Furniture hinders movement and may, in some instances, blocks sighting and weapon fire as well.[2]

Heads: Some ships are furnished with separate heads, including washbasins, water closets, and sonic shower facilities. In some ships, these facilities are contained in a combination wardrobe and sanitary closet; occasionally, foldout units contained in the deck or interior walls are used instead.[3]

Basic Fresher Synopsis[edit]

On most Human-designed starships, a "Fresher" will be present in each stateroom, off each crew or passenger lounge, and in some other compartments, as well. A standard ship fresher is remarkably compact. Although it provides all the necessary equipment for a full-body shower or the relief of biological needs, it is rarely bigger than a coat closet. One person in a fresher will feel cramped. Two will feel crushed.

Although most Imperial starships have superb water-recycling systems, their water-storage capacity is limited. Freshers are usually engineered to use as little water as possible. Long, hot showers are usually possible, but actual bathing is out of the question except on the most luxurious (...and expensive) passenger liners. [4]

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Even the earliest vessels intended for flight duration of more than a few hours will have facilities available for the disposition of biological waste products. Typically, early designs are complicated to use in zero gravity, requiring training and practice. With the advent of artificial gravity, around TL-9, ships of all types will incorporate freshers that both handle waste and clean the body and do not require skill to use.

The nature of the cleaning system in freshers varies, but Human ships will include a shower that uses either water or ultrasonic waves, while Vargr showers use a high pressure air stream. On most ships, freshers are designed to be as small as possible, with fixtures folding into the wall when not in use,[5] but some luxury vessels have more spacious accommodations and even include full bathing facilities in their best suites. [6]

Multi-species Freshers[edit]

In the Third Imperium, waste disposal units are designed for use by Vargr and Aslan as well as all Human types. A properly fabricated single unit can accommodate all three, and many sophonts it was not designed for can make do with an adapter (which usually must be provided by the passenger). There are exceptions, including Hivers, Virushi, Vegans, and K'Kree which require fresher designs specific to their species. Ships that carry such passengers regularly will have one or more freshers retrofitted for their use.

Humans traveling on Aslan ships are advised that the their traditional sanitary facilities are not intuitive, and it is best to obtain instruction before attempting to use them. The Travellers' Aid Society publishes a free pamphlet which covers both the physical technique and cultural expectations for their use.
